Basically, the general public has been lied to.
The public has been told that cross bred dogs are healthier than purebreds whilst still maintaining the desirable behaviours and traits that purebreds have. And so if you breed a golden retriever to a poodle you have puppies that have the intelligence of a poodle whilst keeping the temperament of a golden, also while being healthier than both parent breeds and all cute and fluffy to boot!
Of course that just isn't the case, and the kinds of people who would fall for that aren't very smart people, and of course stupid people don't make good dog owners.
So now we are inundated with doodles. Neurotic and overbred with nightmarish temperaments and even more nightmarish coats in the hands of people stupid enough to believe that a $500 puppy from unregistered parents was going to be anything but.

Purebred dog owners are just as bad btw but they “tame” and already tame animal with abusive training. Every dog that has bit or snapped at me or my dogs was a purebred dog with a wealthy owner and some kind of torture collar.
A pedigree is the lineage of a dog or litter of puppies, listing their parents, grandparents, and so on. It doesn't indicate the health or genetic traits of those dogs.
Poor genetic traits are often caused by inbreeding and bad breeding practices. Good breeders perform health and structural tests to identify these traits and ensure that dogs carrying these genes are not used for breeding. Such dogs are neutered or spayed and sold as pets.
