Why do people hate rats so much?

Why do people hate rats so much? I live in England and people here are notoriously sentimental about animals, but they hate rats with what seems like an irrational degree of ferocity. Is it just an unexamined bias or is there a logical reason for it? Am I dysfunctional because I don't experience an immediate innate disgust towards rats and actually find them really sympathetic and cute? I just don't get it, please could someone explain it to my moronic autistic brain?

    >they were carriers of disease
the large part left out is they lived in human conditions at that time which were extremely poor. Until the age of sanitation became unified the west used to be exactly like india. Trash and shit everywhere, filth growing on walls who knows what in the sewer systems

I live in deep countryside and often see rats in the trees and bushes.
I have no aversion towards them, in fact I find them interesting to watch, but when one snuck into my house it made life hell, so I understand why people are wary of them.

Black and brown rats are really destructive pests. Yes, the domesticated brown rat makes a great pet and (like many parasitic-commensal species once domesticated) are perfectly safe? Feral/wild animals cause property damage, ecological damage, carry an impressive array of disease, can and do attack humans, are associated with filth and poverty, and can be very annoying to get rid of.

Cable and rope nibbling, the plague, them being scavengers and going for the trash or still well kept food, high fertility and a tendency to be sneaky and small enough they can't be properly shoo'd out of somewhere

Are you familiar with the term "sewer rat"? What might be unpleasant to humans about such a creature I wonder

Historically they ate people's stored food when food was limited as well as carried diseases (i don't mean the black plague).

If a rat were to scamper through your front door, right now, would you greet it with hostility?
Has a rat ever done anything to you to create this animosity
    you feel toward them?
I propose to you any disease a rat could spread a squirrel could equally carry.
Yet, I assume you don't share the same animosity with squirrels that you do with rats, do you?

Squirrels are rabbies ninjas, never heard or saw one except as a kid once where It ninja dropped on another kid in recess and bit/scratched him for no reasons and he had to get a rabbies shot because of It

They ruin food and damage property. They're an economic threat, and normal morality is suspended for economic threats.
    >Am I dysfunctional because I don't experience an immediate innate disgust towards rats
Is having preferences and values untainted by social norms "dysfunctional"? depends on who's reckoning.
