Lioness would have an easy win if she'd claw the balls. I saw a video of two males fighting and one had bit off or clawed to shreds the other one's balls. Was pretty easy to decide the winner at that point.

My mother could beat my father's ass so we all know how I ended up turning out. The lions are onto something.

Did he actually fight back like he would if he was fighting another man or did he hold back out of fear of going to jail if he did anything substantial to her?

Apparently even lionesses sometimes kill cubs from other lionesses

Here's some footage of lionesses defending cubs from lions

A horde of Lionesses could kill one, but it's not worth it. This is how a NEUTERED Lion looks. And it still mogs a Lioness and looks like it can crush a cub in one swipe. They need the new male because they need him to protect the pride and ward off others like he was.
+ That cub killing thing ensures only the strongest of males get to pass on their genes, the offspring of elderly or weak Lions are a detriment to their natural selection. I think out of all the Big cats Lions have the best natural eugenics plan going on with the sheer amount of danger they go through while still maintaining control over large territories.

      >A horde of Lionesses could kill one
'Horde' is a little exaggerative. There have been lots of examples of a pride of lionesses killing their male when he doesn't do his job properly. Ie, allowing rival males to come into the territory, not protecting kills, etc. So to answer your question

Why do lionesses let usurping males kill their cubs?

, it seems like lionesses, at least to some limited extent, are aware of their situation and that they 'need' (there are also examples of prides of lionesses existing fine without a lion for years, even chasing away potential males) a strong male, therefore allowing him to kill the cubs of the previous, weaker male.

They don’t, they try to defend their cubs but sometimes the alpha newcomer male is just too strong.

Why don't they just hide the cubs and come back for them later and trick the alpha into thinking they're his?

They don’t “let” them. There is plenty of footage of defensive lionesses getting badly mangled by new males. Lionesses must also leave the cubs to eat and drink so even if they somehow had a massive group of sisters and mothers all completely dead set on guarding the cubs from new males the cubs will be lacking defenders eventually.

If the female fights the male, the male will kill the female, and then kill the cub as well. The female will then die without leaving offspring (or further offspring, if she had others).
At least she can have another cub with the male that killed her cub.
If you don't think that similar things happen with humans, well, you should read up on a little more relatively recent history.

      This.

Killing a cub to an adult male lion is nothing, he just swipes one with his paw and it's over. Or quickly bites the head off that's more common.

While it makes sense on an evolutionary level, I doubt the female lion gives two rats' asses about its genetic legacy. I would think it would care more about its kid's survival more than who the father is.

Lionesses with genes that cause them to care excessively get killed and don't pass those genes on. Lionesses with genes that allow them to accept the inevitable get bred by the new male and pass their genes on. It's simple logic.

If that's the case then lion culture is doomed.

The usurping male is stronger so he'll produce better cubs, and their own investment in the cubs is not worth the cost of defending them.

It's even crazier if it's just one lion. I get that males are stronger but if it's just one can't they just jump his ass? Especially if it's exhausted after a fight with the pride male.

Why would they kill the male they need to have cubs, moron?

bro they're lions. a lioness does not have the mental faculties to go to another lioness "yo next time that guy over there gets done with another dick-measuring contest, let's put an end to him"

Whats surprising is that the male lions have the mental capacity to kill the cubs in order to get the female in heat and then have cubs of his own

How the frick does that even work? They somehow know

          > How the frick does that even work? They somehow know
A decent amount of animals do that. Even regular house cats. Dead babies = lioness pheromone increase therefore ready for mating, or something like that. Pretty simple connection to make.

It's smart. Those cubs would take resources away from their own sired cubs.

The male is stronger so they don't have a choice. They defend them but eventually the male kills them.
