The bird that went extinct because people hunted them too much was the dodo. They look similar (kinda?) but are not the same.
This is possibly because they have become extinct in large regions of New Zealand as a result of the introduction of invasive species by humans. The little spotted kiwi is entirely restricted to pest free islands and protected sanctuaries.
A note of potential interest is that because kiwi is a Māori word, kiwi is both the singular and plural form. The language doesn't actually have an s.
I don't care what Maoris do. Here in English, plurals have an s on the end.

No OP's right. Everyone was saying those were extinct, pretty much every time thylacine or tasmanian devils were brought up they'd mention kiwis too. It was a big example of how settlers ruined the ecosystem.
