There are two primary benchmarks for intelligence; how quickly dogs learn how to perform jobs (based on their instincts and natural abilities) and how motivated a dog is (based on their desire to please; not food)

There is no definitive ranking of the smartest dog breeds, but there are about 20 breeds that are widely regarded as the most intelligent because they meet the previously mentioned criteria/benchmarks. If your dog isn't on that list, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are not smart, it simply means that they are not among the top 20. Among the top 20, certain breeds stand out, such as Belgian Malinois and Border Collies.

Below them, are German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Dutch Shepherds, Belgian Tervurens, Australian Cattle Dogs, and Australian Kelpies.

For the following category. We can put dogs like Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Poodles (standards), Rottweilers, and Doberman Pinschers.

Below the upper echelon (I've left out descriptions as the topic is about dogs in the upper echelon, therefore irrelevant. Alaskan Klee Kais, Azawhaks, Bloodhounds, Drentsche Patrijshonds, and Kai Kens

Next, American Staffordshire Terriers, Briards, and Chinooks.

Then, Barbados De Terceira, Appenzeller Sennenhunds, Barbets, Kishu Kens, and Korean Jindo Dogs.

Here are several breeds that are leftover. They're not dumb; they aren't at the top of canine intelligence. Papillon, Poodles (toy), and the Russkaya Tsvetnaya Bolonka.

      Anonymous

How quickly a dog learns to perform a "job" is modulated entirely by their motivation. So this isn't an intelligence test at all, it's a temperament test for blind servitude.
      >but not food!
And food doesnt count because? Its just a dopamine reward just like handler attention is for a dog permanently stuck with a puppy's emotional maturity. Because food isnt practical or allowed in dog sports, right? Then you're not testing intelligence, you're testing for neuroticism suitable for dog sports.

I strongly believe it is much safer and more correct to assume that actual general intelligence varies more within breeds than between breeds and the only thing that differs is how submissive and unconditionally attached they are to their owners, and intelligence has almost nothing to do with obedience other than meeting a minimum. Unless you can establish average cortical neuron counts on a per breed basis and that it differs more between breeds than within breeds, there is no discussion to be had, only worthless conjecture littered with hubris ridden morons saying "I MAN, MAN GREAT, DOG NO LISTEN TO ME MUST BE DUMB" (<-would also say "i'd sooner die on my feet than listen to commies!") or "A SMART DOG WOULDNT DO YOUR DUMB SHIT FOR POSSIBLE FOOD OR YOUR TRITE ATTENTION" (<-probably accepts bi-weekly pay for above average working hours)

      >What really is the smartest dog breed (not obedience wise)
      >(not obedience wise)

Learn to read you fricking moron.
Here's the citation that you conveniently forgot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Intelligence_of_Dogs

      >Brightest Dogs
      >Understanding of new commands: fewer than 5 repetitions.
      >Obey first command: 95% of the time or better.

This is not a measure of general intelligence (as in IQ or similar measures). This is merely a measure of how useful a working breed can be to humans. Nothing more, nothing less. Describing this trait as "intelligence" is a misnomer. This study measures nothing more than obedience and utility.

There've been numerous studies since then which have measured general intelligence in canines, and often the most obedient breeds are found to be the least intelligent (in a meaningful sense of the word). Here's just one example: https://bigthink.com/life/dog-intelligence-test/

      >Border Collies scored at or near the top in social cognition, inhibitory control, and spatial problem-solving ability, while Labrador Retrievers scored near the bottom.
      >social cognition
      >inhibitory control
      >spatial problem-solving ability
Those are three VALID measure of intelligence (again, in a meaningful and accurate sense of the word), in direct opposition of your statement:
      >There are two primary benchmarks for intelligence

Simply put... No, there aren't only two benchmarks for intelligence. No, you did not accurately idedntify even ONE measure of intelligence in canines.

      Anonymous

Your benchmarks for measuring canine intelligence are well thought out and can paint an accurate representation of canine intelligence, despite what others say. The list you have provided is quite accurate, given your pretenses.

Obedience is intelligence in dogs because they do not have higher brain function
How quickly they learn something is the only meaningful fauge of their intelligence and frankly its usually the gauge of human intelligence too (how well do you do after a year of schooling vs others after the same period of schooling)

Decision-making abilities were progressively bred out of modern breeds in favor of biddability and blind obedience. This is why truly intelligent dogs are difficult to train, and why most of the smartest breeds are primitive.
Primitive dogs learn commands quickly, and (crucially) they can *choose* not to obey them.

      Accurate. Huskies are just smart.

doggays just hate them because they display minimal empathy and emotional attachment towards humans. a husky is not guiding blind children around. they have no feelings for people. they’ll guide a blind dog around, if they like them. they dont protect people. they dont check on people when they’re sick or hurt. they get scared when people cry. they dont show any loyalty to a single owner. but they’re pretty smart, which doesnt have anything to do with having the social constitution of a wild animal. the japanese accidentally left some in antarctica with no food or water, 2/8 survived several months and didnt eat their dead packmates.

Wasn't 100 IQ originally meant to be baseline though (IQ standards per population increasing over the decades not withstanding)? Intelligence is also heavily segregated into different facets of how a person functions anway and it is why trying to nail down dumb vs smart dogs is so complicated as there is so many different standards you could compare or gauge to determine wether your hound is a genius or total moron. Just look at husky gays vs GSD/Akita gays with their "my dog is not dumb it just ignores you on purpose while your dog is dumb for following every order given to it!" back and forth.

                >Huskies are dumber than German Shepherd Dogs
Huskies are more cat-like despite having dog sized brains therefore they are supreme gentlemen. Simple as, dogeredditor.

Cat Chads hereby recognize spitzes as honorary Felines.

I don't get too bogged down on breed tribalism so I dont give too much of shit personally. As long as a dog is not dangerous and can be trained without exploding someday and maul some grandma I am happy. If you think I was meaning to imply that GSDs and Akitas were one in the same that was not my intention. I grouped them because Akita gays along with GSD gays because get into arguments with Husky gays all the time.

Akita gays are just husky gays with bigger penises (or looser buttholes). No difference otherwise.

Meek comparison as cats are extremely moronic.

As for akitas? They’re more German Shepherd Dog than anything, check what happened to their breeding stock in WW2. *pikachu face*

                >Meek comparison as cats are extremely moronic
This. Its why I like cats and why I think they have so much charm. There is a reason why autists identify with them so much and joke about how all cats are autistic. But reword cats being autistic to stupid and autists lose their minds because they know that by extension they are stupid for identifying with them.

This. These frickers have uncanny social intelligence and lateral thinking compared to all other dog breeds I have ever met or owned. Not the fake cross breeds though, they can be sent to the kennels.
