    >George Shaw, who produced the first description of the animal in the Naturalist's Miscellany in 1799, stated it was impossible not to entertain doubts as to its genuine nature, and Robert Knox believed it might have been produced by some Asian taxidermist. It was thought that somebody had sewn a duck's beak onto the body of a beaver-like animal. Shaw even took a pair of scissors to the dried skin to check for stitches

Tbf at the time a lot of explorers were bringing back fake animals they crafted themselves so they could claim they discovered a new species. When you get what literally looks like a beaver with a duck bill glued to its face I'd be skeptical as well

went to the san diego safari park this summer to see these guys (only place outside of australia you can see them i believe)

it was a small building, very dark inside you couldn’t really much, and very, very many people stuffed inside the building just to see these guys. it’s funny because we all had the same reaction to seeing them, they are much smaller than you would anticipate.

What would happen if you released them in the US? Maybe in the Mississippi river.

They fit what I had in mind pretty well, actually.
