The Absolute state of science

Has anyone else noticed this? I was browsing large bird species and saw that it referred to ostriches as "The largest living species of dinosaur" and found pic related from another link.
What the frick is wrong with these people that they see a bird of literally any kind and start calling it a dinosaur? it's like people who refer to T-rex as "giant chickens" or try to argue hat ALL dinos had feathers. It's so cringe and just reeks of reddit "science" from morons who who just watch yutube essays and don't listen to actual paleontologists who have been arguing against these things forever. i even edited the ostrich article to remove the statement that they are dinosaurs. If anything is a fricking living dinosaur it's a crocodile, not a God damn ratite.

Does this mean whales ARE in fact fish?
This is a 100% serious question.

      Anonymous

Whales are technically fish. In technical discussions, they are literally lobe finned fish. So are all mammals.

      Anonymous

yes, it also means that insects are arachnids
      mollusks are annelids

      Anonymous

A certain type of fish yes. Anything with a backbone is technically more related to a teleost fish than teleost fish are to cartilaginous or jawless fish. Splitting even further, out of the jawless fish, hagfish can potentially get out of being labeled as fish or even vertebrates since they don’t have vertebrae.

An atheist is anyone who does not believe in a god. There are entire religions, ones more successful than yours that don't get their holy sites struck by lightning or their peoples plunged into pointless wars over a strip of desert every 5 years, that do not believe in any gods. Coincidentally, such a religion is in far better harmony with science (also known as "observable, provable facts") than anything abrahamic (cults that have grown men chop up young boys penises).

its the ritual humiliation of dinosaurs as a way of attacking masculinity. ultimately their goal is the destruction of all traditional forms of human identity (race, gender, family) in order to gain better control so they can herd us into depopulation camps where they can fake singularity/transcendence and can trick us into believing we're getting to upload our consciousness into a paradise simulation information system when in reality they're just going to euthanize you and use chatbots trained on all of the text you've ever written to emulate you and use them as a pied piper to lead more fools to the slaughter. furthermore they will genetically engineer and eugenically select the remaining humans in 'meatspace' until they are the most servile curs imaginable, completely incapable of violence or revolution existing only to keep the machinery that allows them and theirs to exist in a biologically immortal state of material luxury for the rest of time, a sort of heaven on earth because the true heaven and closeness to God has been denied to them and they know it.

To prevent this, global leaders will turn their respective parliaments into police states and are going directly murder chads that are rebellious by just leaving society. The error is to presume osteichthyes = fish. Besides fish is not a normal nor mobophiletic clasification
Saying birds are dinosaurs is no different from asserting whales are mammals
            >nooo but mammals are not supossed to have no hair and have fins bwaahhhh
            Thats not how it works.
Its not like dinosaurs evolved into birds. Birds just were one of the many clades of dinosaurs that existed in the cretaceous. They walk in two legs, have a straight coclea, are endotherm reptiles, have avemetatarsalian hips, have no external ears, are diapsid, lay calcified eggs, have zw reproductive gametes, etc. There isn't a way in which you could define a theropod and a sauropod as dinosaurs but exclude birds from the definition just like you cant say your second cousin is your family but your brother isnt.

Osteichthyes are literally bony fish. "Fish" is indeed colloquial, but what people usually refer to when they say that word is Osteichthyes. They certainly aren't talking about sharks, rays, and so on; they're talking about tuna, guppies, and so on.

This is like saying "Cicada the longest sleeping bugs because Hemiptera?", and then you're dumb ass chiming in with "UMM ACTUALLY 'BUGS' IS NOT A NORMAL OR MOBOPHILETIC CLASSIFICATION".

When we say "birds", we mean "aves". When we say "Dinosaur", we mean extinct reptiles NOT APART OF AVES.

No. If it is, then homonidae is a branch of reptilia and you MUST accept that reptiles are real because YES, even synapsids derive from reptiles, regardless of gnashing of teeth and wailing. The earliest synapsids have scales.

It's not something that's said "all the time". I remember when people were mocked for thinking whales were fish. This is nothing more than the slow erosion of language in favor of sciencism gobbledyasiatic.

Whales are mammals, not fish. Why? Because they have zero qualities of fish, regardless of whether they evolved from fish or not.

I remember when people would call orcas whales, and then people started saying "um, actually, orcas are dolphins", and now there's some push the other way with the idea that dolphins and orcas are classified as "toothed whales".
Language changes, and so do catagories.
This type of thing will continue to happen forever, so long as the world and ideas continue to change.

                >"sciencism"
Facts-ism? Truth-ism? That's not the sick own you think it is.

                >What is "obviously untrue" about whether something should be classified based on their lineage?
Not what I said. Calling a whale a Osteichthyes is perfectly fine, but that does not make them a 'fish' because Mammalia supersedes it. It's like how you may have genetics from your grandfather and maybe even his last name, but you're not your fricking Grandfather, now are you?

It makes them fish in cladistics but not fish in vulgar speech. You are low IQ so you can't comprehend a different context having its own lingo.

This is 100% of the argument you have. You do not understand that terminology is used differently in scientific discourse than it is among laypeople who were educated last decade.

People have no problem understanding that while "True Bug" is a taxonomical order, "bug" in common speech can refer to literally anything that's small and has a shell.

this post is nonsense, there is no idea, or implication of higher coherent thought to respond to, so here's the truth reiterated.

You literally do not understand this. Taxonomy and common speech use superficially similar vocabularies with different definitions.

Fish means two different things in two different contexts.
Bug means two different things in two different contexts.
Dinosaur means two different things in two different contexts. Some of your type (uneducated people) start out thinking pterosaurs, mosasaurs, and early synapsids are "dinosaurs" because "big old scaly thing". But that's not what dinosaur means in biology, just like bug has a narrower definition referring to a classification system.

if you do not understand this, or worse, think more educated people than you using more exacting language is "subverting common sense", you are genuinely too unintelligent to have a discussion with.

This is why English has the adverb "technically". It indicates that the following statement is to be taken in a purely academic context that strives for accuracy and logical coherency and rather than interpreted as folk-speech based on convenience and speedy communication over accurate classifications.

When you are speaking in a purely academic context, that adverb is unnecessary. Social convention is that all speech is "technically" unless otherwise stated.

You might have severe aspergers which would cause you to miss this just like aspies sometimes miss that common speech is NOT "technically"

You can still have shared traits and minute classifications.
We didn't get rid of the day or the hour when someone invented the concept of a millennium.

I understand the classification system perfectly. The problem is sciencism insists on implementing it in ways that are obviously untrue.

What is "obviously untrue" about whether something should be classified based on their lineage?
You know there's no "truth particle" that says we have to have a "dinosaur" category at all, right?
We humans make these sorting decisions, and right now, the consensus is that including birds in the "theropod" category is the most useful way of understanding and discussing their origins and anatomy.

To add, treating the classification system as "older categories always supersedes newer categories" effectively creates a system that IGNORES evolution rather than recognizes it. We're all prokaryotes apparently, and we gotta factor in those worms we evolved from too. We're worms, fish, synapsids, rodents, tree shrews. By the time you get to things like 'primates', we're so many different 'things' that we may as well be all the others and not 'primates'. That's the problem with this outlook.

The fact is Humans are primates, not fish; whales are cetacea, not fish; and birds are aves, not dinosaurs. You want to call a bird a theropod, and I'm far more comfortable; but "dinosaur" means a very specific kind of organism, many of which WERE NOT theropods, let alone birds.

why do you not understand that cladistics goes both deep and wide, both fish and whales are tetrapods, so they both have tetrapod characteristics, but then ray-finned fish have characteristics that are unique to their lineage and whales have characteristics that define them as mammal, and further characteristics that define them as artiodactyls, and then even more unique characteristics that define them as whales. all captured within cladistics. so both the statement "whales are very distantly related to the ancestors of today's ray-finned fish." and "whales are mammals" are both true.
