the banana cultivar that was most prevalent until the 1950s went basically extinct due to disease and was replaced with a different cultivar. It's nothing new, European grapes for wine are grafted on american grape rootstock because of imported parasites, etc.
Extinct is probably too harsh of a word for the formerly popular Gros Michel bananas - they are still grown commercially on a small scale, and you find them in speciality grocers or order them off the internet.
