Is it me, has there been an increase in the amount of squirrel lovers. I've seen stores that sell bags of squirrel feed, and in the wild bird feed section at another store I found a specifically designed squirrel feed that was essentially a wooden box with a hinged lid at the top so that only squirrels could access the box. I suppose just in case if you thought that birds were eating too much of the squirrel feed.
I understand some of the appeal of squirrels. I used to enjoy seeing them hang off the tube feeders and crack sunflower seeds open like a machine, but they are literal pests. They eat like there's no tomorrow and they'll fricking destroy your house during the winter if your not careful.
What you're gonna wanna do is put butter on your shaft.. er, pole. This will not stop the little motherfrickers. It will get them messy though, which is why you put capsaicin oil (if you have it, if not then use hot sauce) on the pole above the butter. When they go to clean themselves or put a nut in their mouth, it'll burn the shit out of them, and eventually they'll leave it alone. Works on coons too.
I just feed my squirrels peanuts and bird seed directly. There is a juvenile from last spring that grew up around us so he comes right up to the back door at specific times of day when he knows we are in the pantry and waits for us to hand him shelled peanuts.
Here is a pic of him from last spring, he is chunky and barely distinguishable from the other adult squirrels now
If anyone is for some reason not enjoying squirrels at their feeders, they make hot pepper bird food. Birds do not have problems with spicy seeds and actually enjoy the flavor, but squirrels dislike spicy flavor. Its a non harmful solution. You could even add a squirrel feeder with non spicy seed to draw them to or away a specific area.

It works, but only in the short term. Eventually they'll get hungry enough to not give a shit and then the next generation won't give a shit. It also does nothing to rats or raccs
I don't mind them eating from the bird feeder, but these buttholes have been eating all the almonds off my trees for years, before they're even ripe. Frickers.
Give them their own feeder. Fill with black oil sunflower seeds. Put a trap next to it. They will eat the seeds first then go into the trap. Then you can shoot them with a bb gun and feed them to turkey vultures.
They will never stop coming or eating sunflower seeds, and you spend a lot of money feeding squirrels on the ground, but at least some of them turn into bird food, and they don't go into the hanging feeders and scare off the birds.

The good ones have locking metal tops.
Put a slinky on your feeder hook

So first I butter my shaft, then put hot sauce on the tip? And this will help with the seed theft?
yes; first you lure in the furry nut lovers with your buttery seed, then surprise them with an unforeseen burst of hot fury
honestly though, I hope your squirrels don't hurt themselves. If they touch their own nuts after it's gonna be bad
Chilli powder works too, until it rains of course.
Its generally not advisable to put anything on your feeder pole it can get on the birds and potentially hurt them.
