Making sure your cat has quality food & nutrition is the difference between living until about 12-ish or making it into their early- to mid-20s. Literally a doubling of lifespan. I am currently taking care of a feral that adopted our house and she's just over 14 because I put out quality food to supplement her hunting all these years. Now she barely hunts at all due to age & health, so I don't expect her to make it more than another year or two, but she's already beat out the 6-8 years or so she might have expected without any human help. In addition, her quality of life has been improved almost beyond comparison. She gets a generous portion of wet food next to an equivalent portion of dry food every night, and there is always pristine clean water at her feeding station. A couple times a month she gets chicken or fish scraps. In fact, she eats better and more regularly than most third world humans.

cats are adaptable but in prey rich environments its shown that they favor rabbits and rodents then small birds, supplementing with small reptiles and insects. Cats will eat fish when available but are not a significant part of the natural feline diet. You're right that dry food is trash though. All dry food has a much higher carbohydrate content than cats should be eating. Wild cat stomachs consistently show plant content of less than 5%, most of which is from prey and sometimes they will eat small amounts of grass or other roughage to help settle their stomachs like dogs do.
You're probably fine on a wet food diet but feeding raw whole rodents would be the most natural cat diet. It'd be a lot more work to feed a cat that way though, and a cat habituated to processed food will likely reject it.

I just put down a cat at 21 and he only ate dry food because he refused everything else. He got diabetes from the dry food at 15 though and just so happened to live an absurdly long time since we were willing to put in a lot of effort to manage it.
