Good to see more hippo owners. Have anyone had issues with their skin? The other day was cleaning their aquarium (30 gal) and noticed a strange musky damp smell, I didn't took much importance to it but after I cleaned it up I was giving them a quick clean to the hippos to put them back (I have 2 so far) with a soft towel and it came stained pinkish. It does not smell bad just damp smell of the aquarium, at first I got scared and thought it was blood but it isn't, I touched their skin with a slide and looked at it on my daughter's microscope and couldn't see any red blood cells just a couple of bacteria, debris and skin cells.

I feed them once a day with lettuce, some spinach and from time to time I give them some pieces of apple and sweet fruits, they are under a 20W LED fixture that gives about 20k lux in the brightest spot with a day length of 9h.
Last vet check was two months ago when I got them.

Their sweat has sun protectant chemicals in it that turn it red, it's normal. It doesn't really do much since they live indoors but it's an evolutionary holdover from other hippopotamids. There's nothing wrong with them, but if they are sweating a lot your room might be too hot, or the LED light may be too hot. Also make sure they have plenty of water to swim in

Oh that's crazy, I didn't knew they also sweat and red! I was scared they could have some infection and that was blood. I put the light a bit further away so its not as hot, max temp before the change was 90F° on the brightest spot and 82F° on the edge of the water were they usually hang around.

You have to squish them to be that small. No cat will let you do it though, unfortunately

Why would you shrink a house cat and not something cool like a lion or hippo?

house hippos are already a thing. I keep a few as pets

What size aquarium do they need? Can they eat lettuce?

House hippos have a really versatile diet, they are often seen munching on an assortment of things like pet food, crackers, peanut butter, etc.

I have 3 hippos, in a 55 gallon aquarium. No idea what the minimum size is though, it's not really standardized since they're not usually sold as pets. Yes they love lettuce, I feed them lettuce and other veggies, and tiny watermelons

Jesus anon. You're going to want to get at LEAST a 6'x4'x3' enclosure set up, preferably with a large water basin stocked with aquatic plants. House hippos have MASSIVE territorial ranges in the wild, and need room to exercise.

I would want a desktop version of an Takashi Amano aquascape, with neon tetras the size of mung beans, their glowing blue and red colours mean I can still enjoy seeing schools of them swimming around at bean size, with the option using a magnifying glass to look at the shrimps.

The option of 'mini' catfishes that doesn't grow to monster size will also be nice.

Corydoras exist, and they are literally catfish.

Corycats are cool, but I want something that looks like a miniature version of giant catfishes that exist in natural aquascapes for a mini aquascape, I also want mini trouts, mini perches, mini chars. I've been watching Free High-Quality Documentaries, and the freshwater aquascapes are so cool, I've always liked these more than saltwater corals, green and blues and grays.

            mini PIKES I meant. .

I wonder if they can make 'sea monkeys' glow in different neon colours using gene splicing?

Imagine a desktop or shelf top tank around the size of a small wide screen tv with this, pikes the size of minnows and sliver minnows the size of mung beans. If the bonsai trees poking above the water can bloom too, so awesome.

I use a shrink ray personally to shrink my cats. They enjoy being small for a while.

I know you get the opposite effect if they get into the yeast. I had an old cat that got into the pantry and ate some yeast then slept next to the fire and began to rise
