One thing that always rubbed me the wrong way was that they claimed he is a "purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo" but when you look up the breed it looks nothing like him. I get that he's old but he looks more like a fat Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
I always suspected the owners were full of shit

what kennel clubs define as an example of a breed can be miles away from what the original breed ever was, and working people define dog breeds more based on function than preserving an exceptionally unique individual found by a victorian "dog fancier" and trying to clone them via inbreeding

example: few of these are standards compliant border collies, but these would all be called border collies anyways.

european dog fancy culture with its breed standards is pretty moronic and i actually commend people who breed out of standard dogs and still call them by the breed name because their appearance and function are vaguely correct

This was the issue with GSDs. Initially they were just the standard of mutt used by German speaking agricultural laborers and farmers. But Max von Stephanitz wanted to "standardise" this varied breed of dog by deliberately breeding them look more wolf-esc before degenerating to the point that their spines are fricked and hips give out before they can even reach the age of 10. The reason why Lurchers and a lot of sight hounds are healthy dogs is because they still mostly vague appearance and primarily function, so their is no real strict emphasis on ancestry or inbreeding. Can it run fast and is this big and this type coat? Cool its a whippet even though one of its grandparents was a terrier and another was a saluki.

Sucks to hear, but surely there could be some new breed emerging that are actually healthy?

A healthy dog is not a breed by dog fancy standards… no standard = mutt. Hence the “no true pitbull” arguments over dogs that look and act like pits (americans still breed REAL pits, they are all mutts and always have been)

So what was the story here? The owners lied? Shouldn’t this have been looked into in the first place before handing out the title?

Literally this. Not Bobi's fault. It's not even the same Bobi.

That might have been the case if GWR hadn't turned into a marketing company that hands out bullshit world records to whoever is willing to pay for them about 15 years ago

The irony they then followed it up with the Eiffel Tower incident.

Short version: Guy attempted to build the worlds tallest matchstick Eiffel Tower. Only he didn't use matchsticks because it was too much hassle cutting the heads off, so he contacted a supplier and brought plain wooden sticks that you can't buy commercially. Guinness approved it to save face.

Damn, I can't believe being an outdoor dog doesn't actually give them 3x life expectancy while maintaining the same youthful look they had when they turned 4

I'm not surprised, the gap with other dogs life expectancy was way too large.
