I've known several good families who wanted to adopt a dog but were turned away because their (fenced-in, decent-sized) yards were 'too small' or because their (4 bedroom) house was 'too small' or because only one member of the family had owned dogs previously they didn't have 'enough experience' to even adopt an elderly chihuahua.
Shelters want these dogs to die. Shelters don't want people adopting these dogs.

That's called an adoption fee. At shelters I've seen adoption fees as low as $65. In any case, if you can't afford a $500 adoption fee, you shouldn't own a dog regardless. Vet bills alone cost much more than that.

My two rescue dogs eat mostly raw meat, and it costs less than decent budget kibble. No one from the shelter knows or cares what my dfogs eat anyway.

That's the law in most states, all shelter and rescue dogs must be spayed or neutered. Otherwise you end up like Texas, so many overburderned shelters that they need to export dogs to other states.

Most shelter/rescue dogs are strays, not relinquished. They're mostly normal dogs.

I was looking at it. The shelters are fricking insane. They want an application with references, veterinarian history from previous pets, and some even need a home inspection. Plus anything that isn't a pitbull or chihuahua has a $400+ adoption fee.

You are not going to find happy golden retrievers or labradors or beautiful pedigree standard cats. You are going to get the total other end of the spectrum. You will find the most generic looking moggies or toms imaginable but with the kicker of having aggressive or neurotic personalities due to trauma or being semi-feral. Dog wise the best you will find are GSDs or terriers, the kind that need heavy training and rearrangement of your home to cater to their anxiety or psychosis. Otherwise wise someone is going to get bit or even killed. But this is just the best of the lot. You are most likely going to have cats that look like they have been pulled through a meat grinder and "American bullies" or "staffies" as far as your eyes can see with suspiciously tooth marked enclosure bars and walls marked with alarmingly deep paw grooves. Then there is the health difficulties. You are going to pay for not only a generally undesirable animal, but a mentally and physically ill one too. The adoption success stories you hear from are stories to begin with because of how rare people get so lucky being charitable with adopting animals. If you ask the majority of people who adopt it is like they are caring for a child with a disability and that they have to sacrifice so much to keep the dog/cat going apeshit or themselves.

Any pet can die too soon, but with a well sought out healthy and tested pet I’d atleast know I did everything I could to get a healthy animal that I can provide for with happiness
