They make it easy.
I never much cared for them until my friend in highschool's mom got one and the little shit grew on me.
It's simple. They were bred to fight off snakes, their DNA is closest to that of a wolf out of all the breeds. They're brave, spirited little dogs that need to be understood on that level; the problem is that they attract silly owners who see them as teddybears, and then surprise surprise they turn into little bastards.
I love my chihuahua. Though it does suck knowing he'll probably die from a collapsing trachea given the shitty breeding. For now he's enjoying life.
Is it even worth getting a dog if you live in an apartment? It feels like it wouldn't be enough space and I'm not sure there are any tiny-sized dogs that seem nice to have.
There are plenty of people with land who have the appropriate dogs and yet their dogs are neurotic messes desperate for attention and training.
The amount of space doesn't really effect your quality of care.
If you don't have a yard, you'll just have to take them out more often. If you don't have enough space, just take them out more often. Potty training will be a must since you can't simply throw the dog out into the yard when they need to piss.
No mistake, it will be more difficult. You'll have to account for more restrictions than if you had a bigger space, with a yard. Less space means less restrictive space, you can't cut areas off for the dog (like the kitchen or your bedroom) so you'll have to work more on getting the dog to respect the space, especially if you're renting.
But yes, it is possible and yes, if you're not a complete and utter chud, small dogs are great little companions.

People raise them wrong and treat them like toys or babies instead of like a dog so they end up insecure and emotionally unstable.
Treat them like an actual dog and they end up fantastic.
I had a chihuahua for 13 years. They have a lot of personality in a small package. We crate-trained him, so all we had to say was "Go to your hole" (his little crate) and he's trot right in there. He squirreled away his "treasures" in there, like chew toys and bully sticks.
No joke, he was mauled to death by a shitbull. Euthanize all shitbulls and their blackass owners.

Smaller dogs have been tested to have worse executive skills, confirming what everyone knew, meaning that even if they have a biddable temperament and will do, not just learn, tricks, and pay attention to you, they are less intelligent and require more care and effort to keep trained regarding basic life skills and self control while a smarter and more self aware large dog will be "self training" for a lot of basic shit.
This is important if you are a NORMAL FRICKING PERSON who has and wants to keep a social life and their non-dog hobbies, not a "dog" "person" who measures their self worth by their animal taming skills.

Correlation doesn't equal causation. Working breeds are smarter and working breeds tend to be larger. There are plenty of moronic large dogs as well, many of which are considerably more moronic than chihuahuas.

Still, Malinois can be large but they are a medium sized breed that needs to have the size bred back into them.

And since they're small and cute, insecure men often call them rats and shit on them for no reason other than their appearance. These same men obviously dob't care about behaviour issues because they then get a malinois and do the exact same thing.
The reality is it's a dog that was bred specifically to be a companion. And if they're treated well, socialised and trained properly they can be exactly that. Anyone who disagrees should probably take that wiener out of their mouths, then maybe they could get some oxygen to their brain.
