Cats are a pest animal like any other. Many people also keep rats as pets! That doesn't mean they are worth so much concern that we should reduce the efficiency of pest control efforts for their sake. Even feral dogs are a pest animal. Doing a couple simple searches seems to show just as many non-political, dog subreddits as non-political, cat subreddits though (i.e. a shit ton). It's been this way for a long time. Government groups pay scientists. If the scientists find the results that are wanted they get to keep their jobs. If not, they lose their funding and risk unemployment. Look at the whole "climate change" debacle to see how that's playing out.
