I live on a husky ranch, and have seen this happen lots in dogs that are sick or injured. They’re trying to get minerals from the rocks because illness makes them seek out much more nutrients than they would normally need. What i do as a safer alternative is buy them a big chunk of salt so they can get minerals that are soluble instead while they recover. I use himalayan rock salts.
Now that i think about it, it kinda is. Except for cats i think it's more for digestion while huskies eat salt for their immune system. I'm not too sure about cats tho so i could be wrong.
