What the FRICK do I do now? Do I try again or leave him to die of natural causes even though all signs point to him suffering with no chance of recovery?

Shoot him in the head with a gun you coward. It's been the number 1 way of euthanizing animals for centuries for a reason.

It will hurt you of course but are you just gonna sit through another botched euthanasia?

If it’s a rat, why not just freeze it to death?

    >euthanasia "attempts"
What? Are you trying yourself or something? Vets pretty much have a 100% success rate at putting animals to sleep.

      That does NOT add up.

It does if you aren't autistic.
Basically means there's one case in a billion where something went wrong and a dog wasn't put to sleep properly because of some ultra-rare freak circumstances like someone somehow mixed up barbiturates with antibiotics but that absolutely isn't what happened with OP's pet.

How would you know that didn't happen to OP?
Humans survived lethal injections, the same could happen there.

The odds would be insane for that to happen once and impossible twice in a row *at a vet*. And if it did happen they wouldn't be like "oops, still alive. Maybe come back tomorrow." They'd inject more barbiturates until the pet died.
Hence why I asked if he's doing this himself (he almost definitely is).

Fine, I am doing it myself.
Before you come at me, this is a rat. He is suffering from his cancer and I straight up can't find a vet in this shithole who won't use some evil method like cardiac injection.
I was using the AVMA approved CO2 method as described here https://www.alysion.org/euthanasia/.
I followed every single one of the instructions. Container the same size and all. He did not struggle or seem uncomfortable whatsoever. He ate ice cream until he fell asleep. Then he just never stopped breathing. I left him for about an hour. At some point he woke up and started climbing out. I tried to add more reagents, he once again fell asleep but eventually woke up without me doing anything. I reset the entire system, checked everything for leaks, nope, same thing happened.
I know the gas was being produced because not only did I see and hear it but when I took him out of the CO2 chamber it was so potent that I legit started to feel dizzy myself.
I feel fricking terrible because I gassed him over and over for nothing. The only thing that comforts me is that he didn't seem to even care.
Now he's just sleeping in his cage. I gave him some treats and he ate a little bit.
              >inb4 animal cruelty homosexual how could you do that etc
I tried, man. I thought I was doing the right thing and I failed. I'm sorry.

It's still a reaction you homo

Does he have very large tumor lumps?
This would mean more blood in his system and the need for a higher dose.

Not at all, if anything he's emaciated

                christ alive.
maybe put a tea light in the box at a higher level then the rat where he cant get to it and light it? the flame will consume residual oxygen, and if it's higher than the rat's head it won't get snuffed by the C02.
failing that...frick I dont know, man, try to score some fentanyl?

I don't have anything to balance it on where he can't knock it over and light himself on fire. CO2 is heavier than air anyway so I don't even know man
                >fentanyl
I could unironically probably get that

                >euthanasia with CO2
This is a painful way to go. You detect that you're suffocating when there's too much CO2 in your blood. You should take him out with CO from an exhaust pipe or something instead if you're too squeamish to crush his head.

Dude... what the frick are you on...
If you want your pet to have a quick and painless death... just explode the rat. Firearm.
Or do CO poisoning with your car's exhaust to kill the rat.

Wrapped him in his favorite blanket, set him under a big oak tree.
