Long story short I was walking my dog this morning and freed him at some point so he could socialize with some dogs he's friends with.
When it was time to go back he didn't listen to my commands and jumped in a hole in the fence of a nearby train station and started running.
I went after him as you would expect but I lost him in the tall grass so I started calling his name but he wouldn't come back.
I looked for him for a while and was starting to think the worst could happen when I saw there was a roadway nearby.
Eventually he showed up behind me so I immediately put him back on the leash and slapped him on the head because the anger got the best of me.
At the time I didn't think much of it, I don't think I hit him that hard anyways and that never happened before.
We have always been very close, we would always sleep together and he would follow me around the house.
I'm the one who feeds him, plays with him and takes him on all his walks, I love this dog, but ever since that accident he will only hang around my parents and brother (who also love him very much) and he'll be very aggressive with me.
Now he only comes to me when it's time to go for his walk.
I wish I could go back and stop myself, I regret it, I really feel like shit.
I don't know if he'll ever forgive me but I certainly will never forgive myself.
My only hope is as time passes I'll regain his trust
