My dog died today after 15 years of a happy life, she had vaginal discharge, partly (based on context) because she wasn't neutered.
She didn't have to have that be one of her last experiences.
15 years is actually the upper end of a large dog's lifespan and neutering could have easily shortened that if her last experience was a ruptured hemangiosarcoma, a poorly understood cancer that is more common in spayed dogs.
I would personally go with an ovary sparing spay because pyometra is dangerous to treat and a 1-in-4 illness, but ovarian cancer is extremely rare and mammary cancer is a heriditary issue that is barely helped by spaying at the appropriate time to avoid extremely heightened joint disorder and bone fracture risk (but spaying at any time still heightens it, you're forcing menopause on a dog)

You know spaying and neutering is strongly associated with increased rates of practically untreatable cancers correct? No matter how late you do it? The only problems associated with keeping a dog intact are quickly remediated by spaying them in old age at which point the risks associated with such an invasive and radical procedure are minimal as they won't have much time to occur and become serious.
In countries where the average dog owner is more reponsible than their american equivalent, keeping dogs intact has no statistically significant effect on lifespan and in some breeds actually increases it. It's kind of like - if your dog was going to get mammary tumors due to being intact, they were going to get invasive blood vessel cancer if you spayed them.
Spay and neuter is almost exclusively an american thing. Even in canada not once has a vet ever asked or cared.
