how long until my dog dies?

my dog (picrel) is about 12 years old, he has respiratory issues and is generally getting old and tired, but i still feel like hes far from actually laying down and dying. do dogs worsen very quickly and die or is it a gradual thing that i will see coming?

There’s nothing worse for a pet than a lingering illness leading to putting him down. Most of my family’s dogs went out that way because nothing good happens when a choice has to be made. But we did have this one collie who got so excited on the ride to the beach that he literally died of a heart attack while getting out of the car. He would always bolt out of the back seat and land like ten feet away from the car and visit six bushes before we could get the leash on him. That time he went stiff like he was posed for a taxidermy of a classic hunting dog and just kind of bounced and laid there. We put him back in the car and took him to the vet thinking he was having a seizure but the vet said his heart had exploded. I was like 5 at the time and I’ll never forget our other dog, a spaniel, standing in the back seat looking down at him with his head wienered to the right. Dee died doing what he loved and that’s the best way to go.

Keep those claws clipped. Long claws can cause joint problems or make existing joint issues worse. If you aren't confident doing them, take him to a vet once a month and have them do it for you.

It really just depends on if they've got acute illness causing it. Most dogs I've had that got that old just eventually got so slowed down they couldn't really function normally. That's usually the point where you have to choose whether you're going to give them a quick exit or not. Sucks but that's the way it is, good dogs are always gone too soon.

I give him 2 more years at the very most, realistically 10 months. Depending on how long he has been obese it is probably unreversible now.

I've had 2 dogs die of old age (both chihuahuas) and with them it was very slow and gradual, one day they just never woke up, one was 11 years old and suffered from seizures, the other's age was unknown because she came from the streets, but she was already an adult and died after having her for 12 years

Cut the kibble, feed him whole, raw animal products. Check out Paws of Prey on YouTube.

I'm sorry man but your dog needs to lose weight and you really ought to trim those nails back a bit so they can walk around more comfortably which may also help with the weight issue.
He looks like a lovely little nugget though!

will do. but its been pretty hard for him to lose weight, he has heart issues so as soon as he runs or does anything he starts choking and its unfixable. i try to feed him less

Take him to the groomers, they'll trim his nails and he'll feel much better and be more active

Are you the same one guy doing these? And why do you do it? What was the point of these and what would you do if not take pictures of animals? This meme has grown on me and I'm curious about what spawned it.

Yeah I'm one guy, not a bot or anything. I just think people who take pictures of animals with their smartphones must look moronic from a 3rd person perspective. Like how they have to death clutch a small kitten or bend down in front of a dogs face or send a member of their family in front of a wild animal just to take a picture. Some are hit or miss, but I don't really care. People who should not take pictures of animals, not for ethical reasons but for intellectual reasons.

It started from seeing some video of this guy clutching a kitten in a violent from this thread:

I just saw it and thought, "this guy must look fricking moronic while filming this lmao" and that was it. Now, whenever I see someone taking a picture of something I like to draw a perspective piece on it.

You can take a picture of whatever you want. Some have actual reasons like for photographical journals or studies which is fine, but the majority is just to 'save the moment'.

Take a mental picture, or none at all, or do take a picture. I don't care, people just look stupid when they do it and it just is stupid for people to do.
