Hey Waufbros, could you help me figure out what the hell this animal is?
>bought in South Africa
>seller claimed it's a rock hyrax which is wrong because it's clearly a predator
>otherwise has no idea where it came from
>no info beyond that

It's a house cat.
This has been a fun thread to watch though.
anons guessing carnivoran based on carnassials were right.
no?
>casually browsing through Wauf
>see skull pic
>spontaneously think "damn thats a pretty sexy skull"
WHAT THE FRICK
WHY
OH GOD
show me your boner folder
mongoose maybe?
at first i thought some type of felid but the bottom incisors are off. i studied plants in uni so hopefully another anon has this
juvenile hippo
that really tells me what it is
it's a raccoon skull
It's a civet
Looks like those teeth might be carnassials, cant tell from this angle for sure. Some kind of Carnivora maybe. Is there a canal through the alisphenoid bone? That would help narrow it down if it is.
Thanks for all the effort anons. It honestly really does look like the raccoon skull pic but without knowing where the skull came from I feel like I can't really tell if it's that or a mongoose. Would be based as frick if it were a civet since they're my favorite animals, but it's pretty small for that.
It does have the alisphenoid canal, definitely carnassial teeth too.
It's pretty definitely a small meerkat. Look here for comparison

I agree, definitely looks like a Herpestidae. The post-orbital bar makes me think this is a meerkat rather than a mongoose as well.
Might be a water mongoose.
Meerkat skull maybe
The dentition doesn't look right for a meerkat. Maybe it's just young. No idea what it might be otherwise though, it's too stubby to be a mongoose as well.
