German shepherds are NOT naturally aggressive. But they are not complete pushovers either, but I'd say out of all dogs, they are on the friendlier side.
The only aggressive ones are either:
    - bred to be police/protection dogs or have such ancestry
    - due to the somewhat anxious nature of the breed, poorly bred or inbred ones can become neurotic nervous wrecks
    - GSD's pay EXTREME amount of attention to their owners, so I guess shit owners who are either uncaring or have poor impulse control will pass on those traits to their dogs

They're very similar breeds, but malinois have a more prevalent gene for neuroticism which is why mentally they want to work all day, besides that many breeders have bred for police work and igp competition (obedience, scent, protection) so the malinois tends to be more quick to bite. This is just a generality, but working line gsd's are more similar in behavior to malinois than showline gsd's are. Showline dogs are more of the chill house pet, vs the working machine. The differences are mostly in temperament, not as much in behavior because the two breeds are intended for similar purposes. Like comparing a lab to a golden.

Interesting, so does it just depend on each police units discretion if they want to use a Malinois vs a German Shepherd?

Also is there a reason why Boxers and Rottweilers aren’t used in the force anymore?

Police departments don't all operate the same, and might have different priorities, or standards for what dogs they accept, and for what jobs. I know lots of departments will get a puppy and train it themselves (with additional 3rd party training) especially if the dog is going to be used for biting criminals, but for scent work I've seen any dog with a good nose be used. When it comes to in house training departments will go with what they are most familiar with. Not to be forgotten is insurance, which has major sway on any safety related decisions especially for municipalities.

When I was really little like pre kindergarten I think there was a huge shepherd with a family at the end of the street. Every day one Summer I would walk down there and the dog would be waiting for me
There was an old dead tree in a common area that I would climb and rip off pieces of bark then throw them and the dog would run and catch them in the air
One day I went down there and there was no dog
I found out that family moved away

Low income areas like big dogs and GSDs are some of the cheaper street cred big dogs you can get if an XL shitbull is not available. Middle income areas like small dogs like terriers, bassets or poodle crosses because they want companionship and not a deterrence/status symbol like in the hood, also they are cheap maintenance cost wise but you will get occousional labradors or retrievers. High income wrap back round to large dog breeds again because the status of owning a large, exotic and difficult animal to train shows you have the disposable income to afford to do it.

It is like a bell curve of sizes. But that is my personal experience.

I've know one golden retriever in my life, and she was the sweetest dog ever. One day I was over at my friends place sitting on the couch, and she jumped up on my lap and laid down on her back, completely vulnerable and trusting, just so I could give her pets. I was a teen, so my friends mom made some joke along the lines of that "no girls in the room with the door closed" stereotype. It was pretty funny.

This is Wauf, so I feel like I have to say that, obviously, I wasn't doing or thinking about anything untoward, but that's what a sweetheart she was. She'd just throw herself at you, but not at all in an aggressive or demanding way or anything. You couldn't help but love her.

I think that's the Golden Retriever thing. They're the kinda dog that if someone broke into your house, they'd run up to them just to say hi and get some lovin'. They're the ultimate pet, because who is really using them to retrieve? They're just big, dopey, loving accessories. Purely for fun. Purely a luxury.

Carelessness, really. That's what I assumed, anyway. I thought it was just the result of overbreeding; not something they did DELIBERATELY cuz they thought it looked cool

                Anonymous

People here are confused because they like comparing dog breeds to people, but like any other domestic breed you can't really compared it to any human because everything on a breed is deliberated, that's how selective breeding works.
And that's also why trying to do the selective breeding with people doesn't work (besides de free will issue) because a lot of people go for aesthetic shit that don't really do anything and takes a bunch of dangerous inbreeding to get consistently.

Heres the breed standard for gsd. Like many things on the internet it is over exaggerated, and memed on pretty hard.

              >Gsd used to be the most popular breed in the US. A lot of the health and temperment issues stem from over breeding by dummies looking for a quick buck.
Yeah, but when that happens to p*tbulls then it's a whole different issue innit?

              Nah.

                Anonymous

Yea, I don't see that weird low hip on gsd that much even among gsd in the states (from looking at a gsd at a rescue I volunteer at). It's exagerrated by the meme for sure.
However, hip dysplasia, which is separated and still occurred regularly without the breeding for the low hip, is still an issue with the breed. This is a genetic defect caused by the breed popularity so backyard breeders are irresponsibly breeding them (sometimes even inbreeding).

          They unironically do
          >My dog is so smart, he does what i tell him the first time every time even though he hasn't gotten the treat in ages
If your dog is like this, they are not smart. They are extremely stupid. They can't remember that they didn't get the treat and predict that you're not going to pay them again. Thats a basic mental skill (remembering the past and using it to predict the future) and they totally lack it.

Your dog is basically the dog version of an unpaid illegal immigrant who smokes so much weed they forgot yesterday was payday. They can learn how to do the job but you can trick them into doing it without pay.

Smart dogs DONT listen unless they absolutely know they are going to get a treat. If a husky doesnt listen unless they can see/smell the treat AND get it EVERY SINGLE TIME, that is a very smart dog. If I were a dog, I'd frick off the moment you made me sit without giving me my fricking beggin strip. If I liked you, I'd forgive you for forgetting it once, but if you forgot it 2-3 times in a row I would be fricking done with your gay sit speak roll over bullshit.

Ive known huskies and they can learn tricks, and they learn them just as fast as german shepherds, but its true, most of them just wont do shit unless they can see/smell the treat and are getting it every time.

Most dogs will pull on a leash if you dont train them not to and it doesn't hurt. It's just instinct. You can use any dog to pull a sled just by not training them not to pull on the leash, even full blooded wolves. The hard part is getting 12 of them to be smart enough not to get their leashes tangled every 5 seconds.

Alaskan huskies, AKC siberian huskies, russian siberian huskies, and BYB common huskies (mutts with one husky colored parent) are unironically different breeds

AKC siberian huskies are dumb as frick. All of the others are smart.

Accurate. Overbred AKC siberians are an epileptic, moronic mess.

So instinctual behaviors don't make a dog smart or stupid?
Your metrics for intelligence are very rudimentary. You should look into some modern dog intelligence studies, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

                Anonymous

Have YOU ever looked into those studies?

Sample sizes of 5, no control for varying bloodlines, absolutely no control for whether dogs are raised to think or to obey, which could influence results just like less educated people can not raise their IQ scores in adulthood as much as they would if the were educated in childhood, and mirror conditioned african americans pass the mirror test instantly while tribal children in africa do not until they are 7 due to limited experience with reflective surfaces

Someone with a slave border collie will never believe it was a smart dog, it would be submissive and not even eat if you put it in a room with a closed bag of kibble until it was on the brink of death
A scientist raised his border collie from birth to think and solve problems and got it to understand 1000 words with grammar.
Wolves are demonstrably way smarter than border collies and no one has ever been able to teach a wolf english because they do not experience as much of a dopamine/oxytocin hit form being told good boy.

Animal intelligence is poorly studied and even more poorly understood

One of the modern ones that says malinois are the smartest dog had over 1000 dogs and 13 breeds in the study. Not too bad

You should look at the sort of testing they used in their study.

And youre the expert on animal intelligence, or what? Also you didn't answer my question.

                >sample size <100 per breed
                >humans can be assumed to be raised in a relatively controlled environment that fosters thought. when they are not is a subject of study focusing on systemic racism.
                >dogs may be, or may not be, with some breeds being more likely to receive proper education and others being mentally stunted by their environment from birth
hmmmmm. dog systemic racism kept the labs down. malinois should not be that smart, their owners just go nuts with dog sports and raise them to their potential, because the punishment for not doing that is an aggressive shitbeast that mauls your children. shepherd privilege. in the study you're referring to they didn't even study huskies because they weren't considered appropriately motivated.

when humans are studied they are always assumed to be appropriately motivated or given drugs to be temporarily motivated. curious? animal intelligence research is a fricking joke. the fact that the mirror test still has followers should be evidence enough for you to discount all of that "science".

                Nice opinion. Lmfao.

It's certainly poorly understood by you. Dunning-Kruger at its finest.

                This.
