Everyone assumes you will see the threat well before it's on you, but that's not how mountain lion attacks work. Almost every attack I've heard of from around here came from a cougar that either leapt up from a higher vantage point and tackled the person to the ground, or came up from behind. Like, the animal isn't stupid enough to let you see it. It's going to get as close as it can before attacking. This is why pepper spray is really helpful, or blow horns that make a really loud, startling noise. You need something to startle the animal off of you, because you have to assume that by the time you know it's even there, it's already got it's teeth sunk into you. Then it's about getting yourself out of it's grip and giving yourself enough time to do something to defend yourself.
Most people who own guns around here only practice at the range or for human to human combat. No one takes a wrestling class with firearms and rubber bullets, though that would probably be really helpful.

The guy this happened to did everything about as right as he could, he kept talking to her and backing away.
