Honestly, big cats are a good fit for the americas. I especially think the midwest would make a great place for cheetah rescued from dwindeling territory

    >In the 19th century, the jaguar was still sighted at the North Platte River 48–80 km (30–50 mi) north of Longs Peak in Colorado, in coastal Louisiana, northern Arizona and New Mexico.[58] Multiple verified zoological reports of the jaguar are known in California, two as far north as Monterey in 1814 and 1826. The only record of an active jaguar den with breeding adults and kittens in the United States was in the Tehachapi Mountains of California prior to 1860.[59] The jaguar persisted in California until about 1860.[54] The last confirmed jaguar in Texas was shot in 1948, 4.8 km (3 mi) southeast of Kingsville, Texas.[60] In Arizona, a female was shot in the White Mountains in 1963. By the late 1960s, the jaguar was thought to have been extirpated in the United States. Arizona outlawed jaguar hunting in 1969, but by then no females remained, and over the next 25 years only two males were sighted and killed in the state. In 1996, a rancher and hunting guide from Douglas, Arizona came across a jaguar in the Peloncillo Mountains and became a researcher on jaguars, placing trail cameras, which recorded four more jaguars.[61]
Jaguar parts have been found up to the Ohio River Valley in Indian Burial Mounds. Whether or not those were just traded up there from Central America is iffy, but they used to range farther north than they do today.

        >jaguar
        > for a "pet"
THAT is an unusually bold Life Choice.

        >escaped
It's easier for me to imagine such a pet being abandoned by someone who didn't think through too carefully what they were getting into.

Did you know there are lions in Russia, I mean, Ukraine, I mean, Crimea? Some guy bought an abandoned military based after the USSR came crashing down and settled it with lions.

I think once a year is a bit much. There was about a 50 year stretch where there was no confirmed sighting at all, until one about 20 years ago, and maybe three since then. In modern times there have been a few REPORTED sightings, but no confirmed evidence to support them was found.

Back in the Lewis and Clark days, jaguars in the SouthWest were considered unusual but normal. They're listed as a native species of North America. The problem being the American SouthWest is a huge natural barrier to migrate through. Without that desert barrier, I feel that there would have been a native jaguar population from Louisiana & Florida up to Tennessee & Virginia.

yeah but hunting them was only banned like 60 years ago and trail cameras have only been a thing for like 20 years. Additionally the area they are spotted is very empty. Most of the mountains in far south-east Arizona are completely uninhabited. There is probably at least one jaguar in Arizona at any given time.

That's actually really cool. We should release lions into the plains.

Tigers too, they should do well in the sme habitats as jaguars. Texans have more than enough to start a few wild populations. Siberian tigers for further up north if its possible to get them.
