Actually the Romans technically did explore pretty deep into Africa trying to find the source of the Nile. Wrong side of the continent to encounter chimpanzees though.
Carthage explorers found some apes and thought they were people and tried to catch them l and got their ass kicked by the females so they skinned the hides and brought them home as proof
