My gran gran had two budgies, I'd like to have some of my own one day.
Get pigeons instead
Parrots are awful pets and do not want to be pets
pigeons are dirty
Then clean up after them like you would any other bird, the frick?
I disagree. I think that if you want to own any parrot species, an aviary is the absolute barest of minimum. Doesn't even have to be outside, just dedicate an entire room of your house to your birds (of which you should have several). Can't do that? Don't get one. Macaws and larger parrot species should never be in the private hands of anyone that doesn't have an aviary the size of an apartment and years of keeper experience.
>but I know a guy who...
Yeah we all know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who is maybe an exception but for every one half-decent keeper there are HUNDREDS of people neglecting these animals. They should need a license, at the LEAST.
My family let our wieneratiels fly free in the apartment, just with one or two rooms restricted. They slept in their cage which we'd close at night and open in the morning (or occasionally later if like a plumber was coming over or whatever).
Licenses never solve anything.
Aren't licenses required for dogs in most places?
Doesn't stop abuse, just makes money for local government.
No, wtf?
I live somewhere where there's some pretty strict laws (enforcement.. varies obviously) about animal welfare for pets in general and dogs in particular, but there's absolutely no license. Dogs are pretty fricking expensive though, and an insurance is more or less a prerequisite.
>Aren't licenses required for dogs in most places?
I want to live in your planet.
budgies are barely parrots. and parrots love people and want to be our friends anyways, they're just too big for a typical house to be a good enclosure. I agree that macaws, wieneratoos, etc really ought to have an aviary or at least need to be trained well enough to do outdoor time. I know a guy who has a pair of parrots that he's bonded with and they will return to him even outside and he lets them free roam for hours a day and will even take them hiking. imo that's an acceptable compromise though it comes with some real risk.
this doesn't hold true for budgies, wieneratiels or parakeets in general though which are much smaller. yeah their social group will be smaller than nature but these are all captive bred and socialized with humans from birth. parrots absolutely want to be our friends its just bizarre to think that one of the most social and intelligent animals out there wouldn't want to hang out with us when we have all of the coolest shit.
I love vids of people going outside with their parrots. The risk of some bird of prey taking them out is pretty big, but you'll just have to weigh that against the freedom you're granting your buddy.
Get two
Birdproof your home and become extremely paranoid about closing doors
Put a blanket over the cage at night, birds need darkness to sleep well. They're also prone to night frights and have poor night vision, so leave a night light on and enough of a space below the blanket that some dim light comes in, reducing risk of injury if they wake up and start flapping around.
Good advice thanks
Oh no
alright after thinking it through, either I take two budgies or none at all
I don't want it to be sad while I am away for work
thanks for the infos guys; if I do commit to it and buy 2 I will post some pics !
You must know budgies mate like rabbits once they get confortable in their new home, which is like a month or something then they'll start to mate. They have no matting season either, so expect them mating at least twice per year, 4 to 6 eggs per matting, meaning 12 new little budgies per year, which you'll have to sell to avoid overpopulation.
Came from herp to say if you are dumb enough to through with getting these birds anyways (it sounds like your living situation and schedule is not well aligned for them) then you can also store and sell the eggs to reptile stores/hobbyists because there are a handful of popular but difficult species that need to eat very tiny eggs that are hard to source. They'll probably pay you a bit and be very appreciative if you can keep a consistent supply.
yeah they mate like crazy rabbits in the wild, and sure as hell mate as crazy rabbits in a house
>what should I know before buying one ?
they regurgitate food its sicky slimy and gross all over the toys and branches... all the things you read about budgies "easy to clean" fricking lies... this shit is rancid
lol
Ah I see 🙁
Parrots are companions for life and should be treated as such. Train them from young so they don't get out of line (they are particularly loud for a small parrot). If you get one(1) make sure to have it around you, because they get bored instantly. Getting a pair usually solves the issue but they won't be as affectionate.
birb
Get a big cage with natural wooden perches. Add lots of toys and feed it a pellet based diet.
Ty
Maybe it will be bad for me to have only one then 🙁
I work a classic 9/5 job and even tho i can spend time at night and 2h at lunch break, I think it's not enough for them
>i can spend time at night
budgies sleep from dusk to dawn, 12 hours of sleep. sleep deprived budgies be sick, develop bad behaviors. you should not spend time with budgie at night. the budgie is too tired to play with you at night. a sleep deprived budgie will pretend to be healthy to avoid predation.
They are loud when they are happy and they are even louder when they're mad. You have to be ok with never having a silent house again ever. I'm an autist living in the country so this is a dealbreaker for me.
What’s your pet of choice for country living?
Chickens are the best low-effort to high-reward ratio. Free breakfast, free pest control, I give them sliced up melon and they worship me as their god. Indoors I like snakes and fish because they’re quiet and low maintenance once you set them up properly.
Tbh I wouldn't mind if I didn't live in a literal 9m2 box
Oh I see, do they sing at night too if they wake up? I live in a small apartment they can't get a room for themselves
Get at least two. Birds need others of their kind.
Aren’t they like really fragile?
all animals are fragile you fricker
you just have to know how to properly handle it
Lol
I mean relative to other animals
Don’t be dumb
Not at all. They got to be the easiest birds to have.
They don't sing, they just talk alot between each other, and is not a pleasant talk like a canary. They stay silent at night at least.
they last decades. are you ok with having a pet last into the 2040s, maybe even longer?
Yes sure he's going to be my friend
No idea
>No idea
well maybe you should find out a bit more about the bird you want to own before buying it
You don't know a thing about budgies do you?
Budgies do not live that long, the average is like 5-8 years
Good choice, most birds do better with another around
