I like Sauroposeidon but I don't get why it is the state dino of Texas when Alamosaurus is an option. It's also interesting that Sauroposeidon is potentially the last known sauropod in North America before the Sauropod Hiatus, and Alamosaurus both ended the Sauropod Hiatus and made it to the K-T extinction.
my favorite sauropod is Mamenchisaurus
True fact: Mamenchisaurids are literally physically impossible animals. Their center of gravity is in front of their shoulders. Unless they were bipeds that walked on their hands, there's frickery afoot.
How much of the skeleton is actually known?
As with most Sauropods, not much is known of most of them. However...
(White are the supposedly recovered bones)
Here's the actual paper: https://naturalhistory.si.edu/sites/default/files/media/translated_publications/Young%26amp%3BZhao_72.pdf
Note that this was the FIRST Mamenchisaurus described.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamenchisaurus
>not a single complete leg is known
I don't think there can be any center of gravity discussion without knowing the god damn legs
>NOOOO!! THE NECK WAS MADE OF HELIUM AND THE BODY WAS MADE OF DIAMOND WHICH IS THE HEAVIEST METAL!!!!
I don't think that's gonna save you guys this time. Here's Xianjiangtitan.
And don't think I left out the ~~*westerners*~~. Here's Sauroposeidon. Yet another physically impossible Sauropod - and it's not even a Mamenchisaur.
Now Sauroposeidon is VERY clearly reconstructed wrong. But it's also extremely incomplete. The chinks don't have the same excuse.
>Not evne half of the neck is known
>IT WAS TWICE AS LONG AS THE REST OF THE BODY BECAUSE.... IT JUST WAS OK??
I think they scaled juveniles wrong.
The problem here is that people have mistaken and exaggerated estimates of sauropod mass. Everyone has the impression that they're these lumbering mobile buildings like 50-100 tons, but even the largest titanosaurs are probably not in excess of 35 tons, and the average diplodocid probably caps out at 15. Their bones are hollow, their trunks are lean and compact, their necks and tails are all bluff, and they're chock-full of air-sacs; you're essentially dealing with a larger-than-usual elephant with a papier-mache suspension bridge glued on to its ass and face. I wouldn't place Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum above 20 tons, if that.
The problem here is that most armchair paleontologists are fricking morons. I don't care how much you want to whinge about "muh air sacs". Even if they were filled with helium this would be fricking bullshit. Water weighs ~8 lbs / gallon. A 35 ton animal, even if it had NO bones would still contain about 8,750 gallons of water. Pic related is a 10,000 tank. Take this dinosaur and put it in a blender. Would it fit in this tank? Its abdominal organs ALONE wouldn't fit in that tank. And no, dinosaurs do not have fricking bird bones. This "pneumatized" bone bullshit has gotten WAY out of hand. No sauropod could survive the weight of its own body with chicken bones. They were much denser than that.
>dinosaurs are as dense as water
>organs aren't mostly empty space
by this logic the average african elephant should way about 200 tons
>organs aren't mostly empty space
You think all organs are made of air? I am honored to be the first to tell you in your entire life that animals are mostly water (but denser because there's other shit too). If anything dinosaurs weighed MORE than an equivalent mass of water, not less.
>If anything dinosaurs weighed MORE than an equivalent mass of water, not less.
>birds and reptiles can't swim because they sink in water like rocks
brilliant logic Jules Munshin
Do you think humans weigh more or less than pure water? Think carefully now.
I float, so less
ok
By definition they weigh less than water, because humans are buoyant as a result of being less dense than water, which goes for the overwhelming majority of organic life. There's a reason wood floats you know. Fundamentally, things which are more dense than other things, are also necessarily heavier by weight/mass than these aforementioned other things. By logical extension you, being dense in the mental department, are consequently heavier than me in the waist department. Dumb fatty lol
Oh boy. Now breath out as much as you can and dive underwater. Do you still float?
And since you brought up african elephants, let's put that to the test, shall we? The average African Bush Elephant weight is about 10,000 lbs. That equals 1,250 gallons in water weight. Here is a 1,250 gallon septic tank. Would the elephant fit in this tank if it was blended? YEP.
I'm sorry, I'm probably using mammal privilege or something to do my math so I'm sure it's wrong because I'm forgetting negative 17 tons of helium filled air sacs.
God elephants are so cool
Should we start intentionally fossilizing animals to ensure preserved specimens for future archeologists?
It's weird how sauropods are always so insanely incomplete when lots of other dinos we have everything including near entire body casts of skin and shit. You'd think something so big would preserve better.
pneumatized bones
That's my suspicion. The bones are simply too fragile outside the living animal.
That wouldn't matter much if they couldn't break the bone.
>That wouldn't matter much if they couldn't break the bone.
Scavengers scatter the bones and run off with them.
Bruh look at those neck vertebrae. They're literally the size of a lot of dinosaurs.
Totally different environment.
>your huge body can't be covered quickly enough for most of you to become fossilized.
That is actually a good explanation.
couldn't it also be that their huge bones can persist even in non-optimal conditions while smaller animals can only be preserved in optimal conditions, meaning that for smaller animals it's more likely to either find an almost complete skeleton or nothing at all, while for these huge beasts we can find incomplete skeletons from situations where smaller animals would have disappeared completely
That's also a good point.
It turns out a giant behemoth attracts a lot of scavengers.
How much is left after a whale fall?
Being so big means that 1, when you die you attract many scavengers and 2, your huge body can't be covered quickly enough for most of you to become fossilized.
Sauropods are my favourite dinosaurs and I've come to terms with the fact that unless we happen to find one that fell into some oxygen-less soup lake when it died, a lot of what we know about them will be speculative.
It still hurts though.
Sauropods are by far the least interesting 'saur clade. Beyond me how can someone be interested in them. Even worse; specifically.
You're the least interesting mammal clade and the day you die it's immediately getting that little cross symbol
The budget museum made a pretty fun video on the largest sauropods, he's one of the last few non-pozzed paleo channels left, so i would treasure him before he inevitably goes the way of Trey and EDGE
He would never, Trey and EDGE are barely human to begin with
I’ll look into it, those other homosexuals are so obnoxious
>goes the way of Trey and EDGE
What occurred?
Literally nothing, treys content has always been consistent. If it's bad now it was bad then. Idk about edge though.
EDGE pushes troony ideology on his viewers (see his video calling the tyrannosaurus rex toxic masculinity or whatever that means) and is also confirmed to steal from various sources pretending their info is his own by literally copying and pasting their scripts, he's currently getting his ass torn asunder by one guy he plagiarized
this is why I only watch non-soi channels like Raptor Chatter
Trey does the same and always inserts pozzed nonsense into his videos. Unsurprising since he’s a twinky beta male
You are right about Trey, but EDGE used to be a completely different channel with many different hosts, it wasn't until the current guy took over that it became shit
i like sauropods btw
