The problem is you told the truth, everyone lies on those things so why aren't you? Say youre working full time and therefore earn the full time salary and include your backyard in the size of your house and you also live with aunt Ethel, shes retired and lonely and has all the time in the world to spend with kots while you're at work.
If they even bother to check up on your workplace or house and say you lied just say:

I got my cat because he just showed up at my door and came inside and become my pet. 10 years ago. Since then I see one stray cat but it's very afraid of me and runs away. So when my cat dies and I need another one I'm probably fricked.
They ask you so many questions and even make you register with a vet and set up regular appointments. Never tell them you'll let the cat outside or they will refuse to give it to you. My cat came from outside and when I first got him I let him out because I thought maybe he belonged to someone else and would go home but he always came back to me. But I never could make him indoor cat. At least he doesn't hurt birds, he is lazy and mostly just poops and naps outdoors.

A lot of shelters are like this with dogs in burgerland.
I used to volunteer at a shelter before I moved out of state. This dude was abandoned inside an apartment for a 2 weeks before the landlord found him. He only weighed 31 lbs. he wouldn’t eat anything or keep down what he did eat. I said I would bring him home to foster since the vets were getting real worried about organs failing. He was doing much better after just a few days. I told them he was probably ready to be adopted, but wasn’t sure if he would relapse being “abandoned” again. I offered to adopt him as my dog had died a few years earlier.
They said, that’s great. Don’t worry about the adoption fee or anything we will take care of that. Just happy he’s doing well.
I’m poor. I rent. I think it’s just shelters in big cities that are super lame like you described.
