Even if ignore climate change, we still have to deal with ocean acidification, biodiversity loss, depletion of critical resources, top soil erosion, water scarcity and other symptoms as well.

is absolutely right. There are massive real problems with pollution and global ecological collapse, but all eyes are on the unfortunate fact that climate changes over time and there is nothing humans can do to stop it. We can stop plastic pollution, we can stop e-waste, we can stop strip mining and overfishing and poaching. But none of that involves IMMINENT HUMAN EXTINCTION, so we don't care. Notice climate alarmists cannot debate the facts, they just revert to "whatabout the republicans" or "the science is settled!" The reality is all of these claims will be forgotten about, because they're supposed to be forgotten about. Every few years we see "record temperatures", which are trumpeted out as something meaningful, then a few years later it turns out they were never meaningful because new "record temperatures" that are about the same - or worse records in the other direction - are observed. But do not worry, "the experts" have a solution for this! You see, it isn't "global warming", it's "climate change". Too cold? Climate change. Too warm? More climate change. More hurricanes? Climate change! Less? Climate change! Everything and anything is climate change, from the fact poor people want to live in rich countries to the fact that unmanaged forests are full of rotting flammable timber. Climate change for you, climate change for me! Ignore whatever we said yesterday, only focus on what we're about to say tomorrow.

Oversimplified headlines get more attention. The Earth has been much hotter than it is currently (Eocene thermal maximum) but the main issue is the speed at which it’s changing. Generally when there is a dramatic change in global temperatures in a short time, plant and animal species go extinct at a higher rate. It’s really the speed of the change that is a problem, since 50 or 200 or even 1,000 years doesn’t mean much on a geological scale. But everyone on this board, including me, is moronic just like everyone else in the world.

I’m a summer fan but increasingly warmer global temperatures really do have actual consequences for the planet, like increased forest fires which kill animals and plant life, decrease air quality, limits the amount of water animals can access. Certain ecosystems become less habitable for the native wildlife, lots of animals die, etc etc. That’s just for the nature side of things. Humans are also affected by this shit. Too much heat can be just as damaging for our food supply as too much cold.

The real reason why nobody listens to or respects "Climate change activists" is because the solutions to climate change/overpopulation (because that is at its core the problem) are objective and obvious, and yet despite this are ignored or even called immoral, where as polluting both the planet and destroying natural ecologies for corporate profits are untouchable.

The real reason nobody respects those homosexuals is because they target the wrong crowd to begin with. Instead of directly protesting at the pollutors front doors, they inconvenience people who have no influence on the problem. Glueing yourself to the highway, meanwhile being handled with the utmost care by the police gets a polarising reaction going that pulls more people to the other side.

Seeing a trend of young protestors who inconvenience others, but still want to travel the earth, and settle with a herd of their own kids because "it's my life style, frick you"... The hypocritic angle of this angers many, many who'd otherwise gladly do what they can to help battle the problem.

Also, overconsumption due to overpopulation is the problem. Humans thrived due to technology, when animals get to thrive they overpopulate untill they either die of starvation or a disease breaks out, a setback like that is good for a species. The earth could do with less humans. If you really want to make a difference, live a sober life, don't travel, don't procreate.

Exactly. It's just a part of neoliberalism. There is an obvious problem with humans destroying the environment, mostly just by killing off all the plants and animals. But every since about the 2,000s nobody will talk about ANYTHING but "climate change" when it comes to the environment, yet no actual solutions are put forward except new taxes and "green" products. It's just another way of using yet another crisis to steal money from the poor to give it to rich childfrickers. The solution to environmental devastation is to decapitate every single government on Earth and run all the rich childfrickers into the sea.

These are all somewhat poorly places sensors, but scientists aren't absolute morons. They corelate multiple kinds of data to reduce the risk of bias from how measurements are taken. A sensor which is placed too near to a heat exchanger will have a strange pattern compared to other sensors in the region, and will be excluded or corrected for. We can do shit like tell China their GDP figures are full of shit just with a few satellite pictures of night time lighting in the country. What you can do with a little data, even rough and somewhat shit data, is often shocking.
Land based telemetry generally agrees with upper atmosphere and oceanic types, which come from satellite IR imaging, aircraft weather surveys, and buoys in the middle of the ocean all over the world. The planetary temperature is increasing.

          Anonymous

nta, but yes, but the plant angle is wonky because plants need time, and i dont know how fast theyre going to remove co2. and even then theres not much people can do about global warming unless theyre willing to kill off like 90% of the human race, because fossil fuels are really good at generate energy and storing it almost indefinitely, and because theyre very good at this it mean poorer countries, that cant afford the high cost of solar or wind or even have the electrical grid to support such a things, can use them very easily, 90% of electricity is made by boiling water, so you can just burn coal anywhere at anytime you need energy, solar and wind have a lot of conditions to work correctly, and this is also assuming that solar and wind arent magically destroying the environment with their production and running at max efficiency 24/7. theres also the angle from volcanoes because they produce a lot of co2 and i dont even know if the underwater ones matter in that regard since those are running constantly

          >Sounds like this is the way it has always worked on earth.
Carbon, methane, etc have always existed under the ground but we're the ones digging it up and putting it into the atmosphere at a massive scale.
          >Also, don't plants literally use CO2 to breath and more of it just means we get more plants?
Not when it also becomes too hot for them to survive and the only remaining hospitable regions are in the former arctic regions with poor soil quality.

There are no reliable global temperature records before roughly 1980. Maybe 40 years of data isn't enough to make predictions about a system that is measured over thousands?

You are the disingenuous one. When the prediction lag is close to the actual interval of data available your statistical significance is worthless (which is the case here). These guys that try to make numerical predictions are the same type of fraud as the epidemiologists that were trying to predict covid numbers. The real climate scientists are the meteorologists, and they will tell you how fricking hard is is to predict anything, because fluid mechanics is incredibly computationally complex. These climate goobers think that because the average temperature is a more stable random variable that even though they don't have that many samples they will be able to predict things with years in advance. It may be reasonable to use those kinds of models to predict one year in advance, but not more, in my opinion.

              Anonymous

thats also assuming climate averages are annual, like this year was the wettest year for the state in a long time, and the last time i could remember this moist was years ago and after that it was relatively dry the following year before dumping a ton of rain again, and keeps cycling like this; a lot of rain in a year then go dry for a few years

              >what is a Milankovitch cycle
We're actually technically still in an Ice Age, btw. Glaciers exist, which makes it an ice age by definition. We're just exiting it.
              >BUT IT'S TOO FAST
              What an utterly subjective concept.

                Anonymous

I know about Milankovitch cycles happen. They are too slow to observe the current warming.
The speed of the change absolutely matters, if it occurs so fast that plant and animals (including ourselves) can't adapt, we have a problem. The Pleistocene was too climatically unstable to support agriculture. Only the relatively stable climate of the Holocene allowed civilization to exist. And that stability is going away...

                Anonymous

It's not happening too fast, though. We've actually seen a very normal progression of climate cycles trending towards warming.
                >late 18th century/early 19th century: little ice age
                >late 19th century: warming period
                >early 20th century: cooling period, particularly in the 30's
                >40's and 50's: warming period
                >60's and 70's: cooling period (this is when "WILL THERE BE A SECOND ICE AGE" hysteria was peaking)
                >80's and 90's: warming period that continues today
Where is the "it's too fast" part? Because it is already pretty rapid swings, even well before the Industrial Revolution was in full swing.

Even if ignore climate change, we still have to deal with ocean acidification, biodiversity loss, depletion of critical resources, top soil erosion, water scarcity and other symptoms as well.

              Ever heard of the Sun?
The star at the center of our SOLAR system. It's REALLY HOT and shoots these massive columns of FIRE called FLARES. Sometimes directly at Earth!!!!!
Oh yeah, also depending on the area of space the Sun is hurling through, it's fusion actually REVS THE FRICK UP, causing... oh my God... MORE HEAT...
it takes light from the Sun a little over 7 minuets to reach Earth.
Incase you're more moronic than you put on, considering the vastness of the universe, THAT'S REALLY FRICKING CLOSE.

climatards used to say weather and climate arent the same when fox news segments showed snow in winter as proof against climate change.

now they do the exact same thing associating weather with climate because its hot sometimes during summer.

You can literally just look at the fossil record and see the climate generally. There were no ice caps when dinosaurs were around. 125kya there were jaguars in northern North America. Glaciers tear up the terrain. They're not at all quiet about their passage, so we can see where they've been.
