ZT2's modding scene is well known, but ZT1's modding scene made a ton of advancements in recent years, you can now make new animals indistinguishable from older ones.
We still need someone to make an Open Zoo Tycoon though.
Are there any ZT1 mods that make the gameplay less archaic? Like T-Rex destroying all the trees in their exhibit and stuff
https://i.imgur.com/THRhosp.png
The original is so much better.
1 & 2 are honestly just different kinds of games.
I get how some people might like 2 becase it's LE HECKIN 3D but the animals imo look like shitty cartoons, whereas in the first one even though they were sprites, they looked "real."
Plus, I hate how in 2 the exhibit and its design really don't matter. You can stick a moose in the desert or snow or whatever and it'll be happy as long as it has a little bit of deciduous forest floor, which again I could see how some people might like that, but then it just turns into a boring sandbox and less of a real game like 1. Although I guess you can make the exhibit look however you want and mix and match any animal and you won't have dumb shit like MOOSE DOEN'T LIKE BUSH 5. At the same time, in ZT1 you can mix and match certain animals but it's tough to get the exhibit just right but it's that challenge I enjoy.
PLUS there's like 300 animals in the first one and like 40 animals in 2, so there's that.
But I WILL say this about ZT1, the dinosaurs have always been fucking glitched ever since it came out. If there is a tree in a mean dinosaur's exhibit like a t-rex, it will b-line right for that tree and immediately demolish it which turns into rubble which they don't like, so to circumvent this I've always put the necessary amount of dinosaur trees in another section of the exhibit just there because the game needs you to have trees to keep the animal happy, but I block it off with fence like a separate adjacent exhibit, except for 1 tile which I then block off with water so they can't get to the trees. Fucking ridiculous, but whatever.
Favourite games as a child 1 and 2. Played 1 more when younger due to my pc not being able to run 2 well. Now my PC is not able to run Planet Zoo well.
History repeats itself.
I always made "jungles" by closing the whole map, and putting in a whole ass jungle in it with water full of sharks n, shit. And I put a lot I mean A LOT of animals there, and watched them go kill each others.
I have somewhere around 15 gigs of mods for this game. Lord knows how many hours I've clocked into it. I still go back and occasionally play.
ZT1 is pretty comfy too and also has an extensive mod scene
god anytime I try and find new mods for either is so wild because the websites are ancient forums that still have people that post on them
My ex girlfriend played this shit religiously, like 14 hours a day for a while. I reckon it’s pretty fun, but not that fun.
Always thought it was funny when animals would just be randomly shitting out young without you noticing then you get a notification like >peacock 53 has given birth
And you’re like >I had 53 of those fucking things?
Dino expansion was shit tho
Did you know that the Extinct Animals expansion had an iceberg item that you could place on your zoo and it had a small chance of having a caveman frozen inside? Then the ice would melt and the caveman would roam your zoo like a normal guest.

I only played ZT1 as a kid.
Most of my time was spent in that pre-made zoo map with infinite money. I'd build a bunch of dinosaur enclosures then let them all out just to see the chaos unfold.
It's surprising how long it took me to get bored of doing it.
I beat like every missions but the last 3
Guest happiness is already hard to manage but getting it to stay at 95/98 is a fucking retarded requirements and it feelt like pure rng whether you'll be able to maintain it there by the deadline
In the first game I'd always stick a patch of water in front of the gate so the zookeeper couldn't leave and go lolygag around the food court when he should be feeding the animals and cleaning up after them
Evidently I had an autistic hardon for tycoon games, as ZT2 figured with SimCity 4, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, and Railroad Tycoon 3 as my all-time most-played games as a kid. I remember on youtube watching ZT2 machinimas. I also had ZT1, which was good too, though I sunk most of my time by far into the second one, probably because I wasn't that big into the whole moneymaking part of it when the sandbox mode existed and I could just build my own dream zoo
People saying 2 is worse are delusional. I grew up playing both and 2 is far more fun with more options for animals, more ways to interact with the animals and guests, and more meaningful alternate ways to build your parks. Making a paleozoic safari is something I have never seen since zt2.
I really really liked this as a kid. Still have it on disc at my mothers. AFAIK the mod scene was pretty good too, you could mod various Pokemon in as additional animals
I spent so many hours playing it when I was a kid. Loved it to bits. I downloaded it again like a year ago and tried to play it but there was a lot of objects missing from it, which was a shame. Ah the memories
Did anyone else block off the zoo entrance with a wall and then just turn the entire zoo space into one gigantic exhibit with every single animal from a specific biome? I'd do this and then just watch them until I got bored.
zt2 is king
what about planet zoo anyways? i found out quickly i can't really stand the nu-sandbox editor design but otherwise it's a neat upgrade if not for frontier being gnomish as usual
>planet zoo
Are they gonna make that for Playstation or what?
Did anyone else block off the zoo entrance with a wall and then just turn the entire zoo space into one gigantic exhibit with every single animal from a specific biome? I'd do this and then just watch them until I got bored.
This is why ZT2 sucks. There's no incentive to bother to try to play the game when you can just do shit like that--I guess unless you want to fuck around in a sandbox for an hour til you're bored.
ZT1 blows it the fuck out.
And holy shit, I'm glad I already own this game because apparently it's rare or some shit now? I bought it at walmart a few years ago for 10 bucks.

Zoo Tycoon 1 weirdly isn't even on steam, gog, gamepass or anything. Pirating or finding an old disc somewhere seems to be the only way to get it.
We really need to get Valve and Microsoft to put the original on the Steam Store.
The original is so much better.

I didn't mind matching the plants and substrate to the animals, but getting the right amount of hills and cliffs in a enclosure was tedious and stopped me from keeping a bunch of animals.

To be absolutely fair you need to have like 160 IQ to make mountainous exhibits in ZT1.
I made Moose World in ZT2. It was absolutely full of moose and only moose.
Played the shit out of ZT1, and I didn't really like ZT2 all that much.
The trick is to make the exhibit better before they hatch. From what I can remember, you can still check their thoughts on the exhibit while they're still an egg.

You can check the egg's status, but all it will say is that the egg requires the care of a scientist, but generally speaking it is a good idea to make an approximation of what will make the dinosaur happy before you let it hatch. You can use the in-game awards to gauge when you've designed an exhibit sufficiently, but that will only work a certain number of times depending on what awards you're getting. If you're that autistic about it, you can just go to a guide website like Wisco's and pre-build the entire thing before you even place the egg in exactly to that animal's specifications.

It is so fucking retarded and bizarre that Zoo Tycoons 1 & 2 are not on Steam, GOG, or Game Pass. I think the only way to get ZT2 legitimately is through fucking Amazon of all places.
Is it because Microsoft forgot the Zoo Tycoon series exists, or is it because the Xbox game was such a flop that they got butthurt and canned any future plans for ZT into perpetuity?
Tho, I will admit something: The amount of mods you can download and chuck into ZT2 kinda makes it on par with ZT1. Especially the ones which actually make the game look good, those are the shit.
I should get around to finding a new copy of ZT1. I still have my copies somewhere but I lost the box and it's such a nostalgic game for me I'd like to have it displaying on my shelves
Zoo Tycoon 1 weirdly isn't even on steam, gog, gamepass or anything. Pirating or finding an old disc somewhere seems to be the only way to get it.
Microsoft doesn't want it to compete with their reboot. The last thing a company like Microsoft wants is to support an easy to run easily modded (i.e. they can't monetize) version of a game that would cut into other sales.
There's no technical reason stopping it, ZT1 runs perfectly fine on modern OSes. It's among the top requested games on GoG too so Microsoft has definitely been pestered about it before, they just won't approve it. Blue Fang is dead but Microsoft still owns everything.
Not like it really matters anyway, it's abandonware and you can find it everywhere.

Animals don't trample at high happiness, just make the rest of the exhibit better. T. Rexes are one of the fussiest animals in the game and basically need perfect exhibits to stay happy but it's completely possible.
In the first game I'd always stick a patch of water in front of the gate so the zookeeper couldn't leave and go lolygag around the food court when he should be feeding the animals and cleaning up after them
That's why you should manually assign zoo keepers to exhibits. Unless there's an emergency they don't wander far from their assigned exhibits, if they only have one more often than not they just get in this loop of walking in and out the door until they find something to do, and most zoo keepers can handle 3-4 normal size exhibits by themselves if they're next to each other, though bigger exhibits should have dedicated or multiple zoo keepers. Still a good idea to have a few unassigned zoo keepers floating around wherever to drop into exhibits that need extra help like if the lion exhibit gets covered in crap. Scientists are slow as fuck and Divers have really, really bad pathfinding in tanks so it's good idea to have those dedicated to a single exhibit though.

Yeah I can pretty confidently wing the design of most exhibits but animals that want elevation are bullshit. I still have no real idea how the game determines the presence of cliffs.

Killer penguin
The most dangerous predator known to man
i had fun dragging people into the predator exhibits and refilling their corpses

Wildlife Park 2 was also a pretty good game. The animals even had mating animations lmao
