As with people, the poorly bred ones are the most well known. A well bred Golden is intelligent, agile, an excellent swimmer, deeply loyal, motivated, and extremely loving. Bad breeding and bad owners (lazy suburban women) end up overfeeding them, never exercising them, and letting them become sedentary and unhealthy stinkballs.

If you find a good one - you will never want another kind of dog again, and the hose baths, brushing, vacuuming and bills will never once matter.

A very good boy indeed! But they die too fast and aren't all that playful, at least the ones that I've been raised around (my family had 4 growing up). The BEST golden is the mini golden. They live twice as long because they aren't inbred and are big enough as to where you don't gotta worry about roughhousing but small enough as to where my noodle of a sister with a bmi of 16 could walk ours with ease. They're also a lot more playful and intelligent than normal goldens. They look like puppies for years on end too. Truly the best dog ever. Mine would talk if she wanted something, it was kinda creepy because it always like she was trying to mimic human language.

    no hes right
but 98.3% of dog bites don't cause anything that needs more than a bandaid or like, one stitch (so nothing but the doctor wants money)
and 80% don't do anything period
    goldens are that 80%

I have two. The cancer rate is... rough but the dogs are golden. They are an easy breed but that doesn't mean you will get an easy golden or that you don't have to know what you are doing.

Train fetch young and train it well. Morning exercise is key to good behavior (for any dog really) and these love to play fetch. They are very food motivated. The dried chicken liver treats tend to work well.

Be ready to brush at least every other week or better yet weekly to keep their coats up. Get a de-matting/claw brush, everything else is useless (pictured). Consider getting an electric trimmer if you get a golden with longer butt fur so you can trim that down. Shedding is fine if you clean your house weekly and keep on the brush. If you're disgusting slob and only vacuum every blue moon avoid this breed. Get a true hose attachment for the bathtub and hair catcher for baths. It makes bathing faster and easier.

They are an underfoot and on your lap breed so great as companions but some people are put off by it. They also tend to be friends with everyone but like all dogs they still need to be socialized young. If they don't have positive stranger people and dog experiences as a pupper they can end being bitey like any other dog breed.

60% of golden retrievers will die to cancer. Be ready to be emotionally wounded and sit at least a couple of a grand to deal with it.

The main factors I had when choosing a dog were at least midsized and extremely unlikely to bite. That brought it down to Goldens and Brittany Spaniels. I chose goldens since they are lower energy.

What about Labs, German Sherpherds or Huskies?

Tempting but offered no advantages over the other two

            >Huskies
Huskies are not a good pet dog in most cases.

Goldens bite more than other dogs. They just don't do complaint-worthy damage.

puppy goldens are bite machines and can remain so if the behavior is not addressed. Adults tend to bite less than comparably socialized other breeds while also being generally very friendly and outgoing

Huskies are great pet dogs - if your idea of a pet is a friend instead of a drooling slave. Throw a stick, and the servile retriever wheezes and pants and shambles to bring it to you. Do the same before a husky, and she will eye you with coolly polite and somewhat bored amusement. And just as inferior people prefer the inferior animal which scampers excitedly because somebody else wants something, so do superior people respect the superior animal which lives her own life and knows that the puerile stick-throwings of alien bipeds are none of her business and beneath her notice.

The retriever barks and begs and tumbles to amuse you when you crack the whip. That pleases a meekness-loving peasant who relishes a stimulus to his sense of importance. The husky, on the other hand, charms you into playing for her benefit when she wishes to be amused; making you rush out the door with a bag of treats when she feels like unrestrained exercise, but refusing all your attempts to make her play when she is not in the humour.

That is personality and individuality and self-respect—the calm mastery of a being whose life is her own and not yours—and the superior person recognises and appreciates this because he too is a free soul whose position is assured, and whose only law is his own heritage and aesthetic sense.

Altogether, we may see that the retriever appeals to those primitive emotional souls whose chief demands on the universe are for meaningless affection, aimless companionship, and flattering attention and subservience; whilst the husky reigns among those more contemplative and imaginative spirits who ask of the universe only the objective sight of poignant, ethereal beauty and the animate symbolisation of Nature’s bland, relentless, reposeful, unhurried, and impersonal order and sufficiency. The retriever gives, but the husky is.

they'll honestly be fine in most climates provided they have good shade and water and you keep them groomed(deshedding them helps a lot), if you live somewhere rough and it gets oppressively hot get a kiddie pool or something they can take a dip in and if you live somewhere unreasonably hot like the southwest US just keep them inside during the day at the least, which you honestly should be doing with most pets regardless at that point. Honestly they do fine indoors ingeneral provided you take the time to train them and don't mind vacuuming every few days

        Stop the obsession with breeds
Unless you have a specific purpose you need a dog for (i.e, hunting, catching rodents, guarding, herding, etc) then the breed of a dog DOES NOT MATTER. Get a mutt from your local shelter or whatever.

It was once a really stinky, irritatingly juvenile, disgustingly hungry dog, but a healthy working dog that didn't need much upkeep. And then the AKC got it, amateur pet breeders proliferated it (when they are only qualified to let mutts do their thing, seeing as even professionals can't keep dogs from turning into abominations) and it retained all its bad qualities, but accumulated a lot of cancer and general health disorders, as well as a high maintenance coat that needs regular trimmings and even a sanitary cut.

Throughout all of that, they never thought to breed it to smell better or act like less of an idiot.

I thought goldens were generally pretty smart. But yeah, a lot of goldens are actually inbred as frick at this point which has not exactly done wonders for their physical or mental health. The mental instability that it's caused is why (poorly bred) goldens are actually one of the leading causes of dog bites in the US.

        Anonymous

A dog doesn't have to be intelligent to be obedient. This is a noticeable problem with doggays, they think the "goodest boy" is the "smartest boy", but malinois have an indepence streak that causes them to score poorly on obedience while on real general intelligence tests they outrank border collies.
