House hippo maybe? They sleep like 16 hours a day and are ubiquitous throughout North America

I - and almost everyone else in this thread who isn't taking the piss - instantly clocked it as a badger or wolverine, with the only point of ambiguity between the two being the blurry nature of the photo. How the FRICK did the "wildlife officials" not know?

Thinking about it, it could also be a raccoon dog (raccoon dog, not raccoon). They're highly invasive pest in many parts of the world, i don't know if they're already established their population in the US but if they aren't, they would want to serously investigate any potential incidents before it's too late.

I'm seconding this. Pygmy hippos from what I remember tend to be solitary and nocturnal too.

could it be a melanistic badger?
has it ever been recorded before? it's never been recorded in things like pumas, but if a population has been put under a lot of stress and a lot of inbreeding occurs, shit starts to happen.

the tones are all wrong for it to just be the lighting.
that's why initially thought it might be an escaped wolverine. it's clearly brown in tone, and melanism can look pretty brown in some expressions in animals.
