Maikäfersuppe made from roasted maybugs or their larvea is a traditional german and french food, not gnomish, that had been eaten until the 20th century.
Apparently people would also eat the bugs raw or candied. Considering how many may and junebugs swarm central europe in the summer it isn't a dumb idea to get some use out of them. Especially since their larvea is so harmful to plants.
>Considering how many may and junebugs swarm central europe in the summer
Compared to how many there used to be it's really not that much anymore.
They used to swarm all over. Kids would get holiday from school to help catch may beetles back in the 19th century.

Wtf they're called June beetles??? I'm from post USSR and they are called May beetles here.
June beetle and may bug are the names for multiple subspecies of the same family (Scarabaeidae). In my area pic rel is a june bug while a may beetle is what you posted. The biggest distinction is just when they fly, that's whete they get the names.
There is one in german but he is tiny so who cares.
>traditional german
wtf. no its not
It fell out of favour but it was a pretty popular dish back in the day. You can read about it in Magazin Für Die Staatsarzneikunde from 1844 on page 403

My great-aunt told me about it once upon a time. I don't think she ever ate it but her mother did.

That's a lot of baseless accusations to throw at someone sharing fun history facts about soup.
You ignored his mention of it being eaten and sold in cake shops as a candied treat. There's also french references to it. The magazine's reference to crab is also interesting - in many places crustacean were considered pest-like and a food for the poor. Crabsoup too was a poor peoples food in ocean areas. But just because people had dislikes against it doesn't mean it wasn't eaten.
If you have a grandma or great grandmother ask her about Viehlebertran, Kutteln or any other kinda gross dish you had to force down because it was the only thing that was served.
There's something at work that eats a ton of these dudes and then leaves these weird turds thats just a bunch of hollow shells stuck together. I can't for the life of me figure out whats eating them,
