If I ever manage to find a job I be buying and caring for a lizard. A gecko or ocellated lizard or blue tongued skink. Something like that.

It won't cure it but it'll give you purpose which helps a lot. My depression was caused by unmedicated bipolar disorder so I'm fine now, but back then fishkeeping did wonders for me. Just knowing that you created this artificial little piece of nature with its own live plants and nitrogen cycle was so pleasing to me.

If you're depressed because of a lack of oxytocin then yes. Dogs have been shown to increase oxytocin in their owners when their owners pet/play with them. I can speak from experience, I always feel better when I pet and play with my dog. Not everyone seems able to experience that though.

I think there's a correlation between the maturity of that other lifeform and the happiness it brings you. My mom calls this being "little hearted". A baby requires very little from you in terms of material needs, similar to a pet. Their wants are easy to understand and satisfy. When that happens, they clearly communicate that they've been satisfied. It can easily bring a sense of satisfaction doing something that comes easily. Of course, this is all assuming that you even have the financial stability to provide for it.

Try growing plants first. Flowers, vegetables, etc. it could help without the issues of neglecting an animal needs. If you neglect a plant either they are fine or they might die but it is not as bad as having a pet get sick and die because you neglected it or become misbehaved and cause trouble for you and others.

This, start with a plant and see how that takes. Then move up to ant farm and go from there

my rats cured my depression like, instantly. Had the best years of my life teaching them tricks, cuddling, watching them try to run up walls, watching tv together... then one of them died and it became even more depressed than i was before.

    Not intrinsically OP.

It is a great distraction and can give you more time and experience in finding what can alleviate what you're going through.

It is very easy to get wires crossed and think you should buy more animals or have a pet human. I had friends who have awful smelling houses and neglected animals because their mental state prevented them from understanding what about keeping animals helps them.

I am incapable of love from PTSD caused by the Iraq war. I have family and people that try to be apart of my life, but I shell up. The government pays me enough to stay home and make enough money. I push people out of my life because of wheat happens when they get close and die.

I volunteered at a dog sheleter and do a bit still and can't even commit to that.

Doctors and drugs (legal/illegal) do not help.

    Depends.
    I had hamsters.
Once hamster mom ate the kids, then father hamster was sick and mother hamster ate his face while it was alive.
She also got sick exactly like father hamster a month later and died.
I bought another hamster and one day i found it dead without a reason (two days in my home, no smoke, same food as the store where i bought him, never touched him, no music, everything perfect).
My friend's hamster died because a glass fell on the floor and the sudden sound made the rodent have an heart attack.
Those little c**ts are inbred, i tell you what.
They're middle age royals dieing of horror movie diseases, filled with tumors and infections

As someone who deals with depression- I love my cat. He’s a cute little innocent animal that shows me affection and depends on me for love, entertainment and survival. He’s always there to distract me from what’s got me down.

But here’s the thing- you have to be honest with yourself…are you able to provide a good life for an animal? Will you play with them, take them on walks, always provide fresh food/ water, etc?
Pets are a big responsibility. If you don’t feel like you currently have the time or energy to care for an animal, then wait until you to. Just my 2 cents.

No, but it will make it easier to manage.

Dogs are a great option. They give you opportunities to get outside, which does help with depression. You can use them to meet people too, so that's a bonus.
