A domestic deer would not be raised in the wild, but around humans. Your average buck being "deadly as frick" is irrelevant. You're looking at literal wild specimens and I bet 99% of the times its a male (i.e. horns) too. The risks would drastically go down if it was a Doe raised by Humans from Fawnhood. Even unsocialized dogs and horses will fricking kill you or try to. Additionally anyone not a weak b***h should be able to grapple down a Doe

Id rather have a pet whitetail then a Pitbull.

It would be dangerous to the human race because people would entirely stop breeding with each other

reindeer make okay outdoor pets and muntjac are only slightly more demanding than dogs. Idk about whitetail deer though seems like it would invite a lot of nonsense. I've had enough issues with people trying to poach my livestock and call it hunting, I can't imagine how they'd try with whitetail deer.

Yeah. If morons can own dogs bred for bull baiting and blood sports, I should be allowed to have a pet bambi.
I mean there's reindeer, but white tails are so beautiful.

Any dog or dog+ sized animal can inflict harm on you if it feels like it needs to fight for its life. I think an agitated Horse is way more dangerous than any Doe.

About 6 people are killed by deer every year. That's far, far fewer than any other animal. Yes, the potential for harm is there, but they weight like 100lbs in the south. I'm not seeing a real deal breaker for pet deer.

Not too much more dangerous than a horse or bovine. Just make sure to selective breeding them to be gentle.

Deer can kill you easily with their sharp hooves and antlers, even white tailed deer are dangerous to a degree. Also they carry disease and parasites. I love deer and they are the cutest mammals in my opinion but they will never make good pets.

Dogs are domesticated and deer are not. If you raise them both in your home you're still way more likely to be attacked by the deer

Pitbulls are still domesticated. Deer are not. Deer are wild. Even if you raise it, a deer in your home will frick you up.

i mean wolves are probably more dangerous than deer, yet we still made them into dogs, so why wouldn't we be able to domesticate deer given some time

My guess is that they're too dumb and not meaty enough to be worth domesticating?

Deer are very meaty, enough to feed a family for at least a month or two.

          Anonymous

There are already ranches raising deer for meat right now. Granted, they are still a niche product; deer get you less meat than say a cow or pig, and need higher fences to hold them, but the domestication process is well under way at this point.

I'm not being an butthole, but I am actually interested if there's named lines and a very process going on. I know Texas longhorns have named lines and a purebred listing, and wonder how the deer thing mirrors this.

The North American Deer Farmers Association would be the place to start looking into that. There is also the North American Deer Registry, which, well registers pedigrees for farmed deer.

    Yes.
Deer have not been domesticated to be pets.
Some lines have been heading towards livestock territory but that is nowhere near 'pet'.
It's like when you see those tards who keep foxes or macaws in their homes. Their care requirements are too vast and complicated to be met by someone with a lot if land and money to spare, LET ALONE WITHIN SOMEONE'S HOUSE.
If someone has a large wild animal, any large wild animal, in their home, it is being neglected. Even if their intentions are pure, large wild animals do not make even half-decent pets.

Would it be dangerous to allow people to keep deer as pets?

I've been told of a neighbor that years ago had a deer as a pet. It was an abandoned baby so they took it home and raised it. After it big they let it go into the forest but it kept coming back. They would tie a bow around its neck for hunting season so the hunters wouldn't shoot it. They raised it like that for years, and I don't remember the end of the story but I'm sure it just didn't show up one year and they said it ran off in a pack.

I agree that you can't keep one as an indoor pet, but letting it go and caring for it like the story I mentioned I see no problem with.

When I was a kid my grandma's neighbor did the same thing, found a baby with its mother which had been hit and killed by a car so he took it home. Her name was Flower and she had a little collar and would come up to you to be pet. Usually she just wandered around outside but once I left the back door of my grandma's house open and she followed me in much to my grandma's chagrin. I'm not sure if the deer was house trained or not, probably not. Not sure what happened to it, eventually it just didn't come home one day.

There are already ranches raising deer for meat right now. Granted, they are still a niche product; deer get you less meat than say a cow or pig, and need higher fences to hold them, but the domestication process is well under way at this point.

There's a domestic elk farm about an hour away from me. I'm not sure how successful they are with keeping the elk in their pasture but I always see their herd hanging out in the field and their jerky is pretty damn good so it seems to be going well.
