Depends. A modern man, an agricultural man, or an hunter gatherer? The latter would win, the former two not really.

You could try to use terrain advantage and funnel it in. Tigers can climb trees and swim, so those are out. They've also been known to go into the caves of hibernating bears to try to prey on them. Find a cave with a small enough entrance, rig it with branches so that something that goes in would have trouble backing out (like a fish trap), then lure the tiger into the cave. You would be waiting with a spear at the end of the cave. Ideally the cave would only be big enough for the tiger to go in, but not to maneuver around you. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

Its possible, but 19/20 times the tiger wins. And even the 1 win you get, there is a pretty big chance the tiger runs down the spear disembowels you anyway. Big cats are pretty busted.

If the man is well trained and willing to risk death than sure. He has a fair chance. Even if he dies a single good injury on the big cat will fester and eventually kill it as well.

The Romans tested every matchup they could get their hands on in Venationes
It's hard to find records of actual win rates and shit but "dude with spear fights X" extended all the way up to bears and bulls, including all the big cats, and they won often enough that there were professionals that made careers out of it.
They also had access to hippos and elephants but I can't find any record of solo combat against them, whether that's because it just isn't realistic or they were too valuable to use for that.

I don't think I'd want to go up against an elephant alone with a spear, you're just begging to get trunk parried at that point.
And then the elephant will have the spear. Chilling.

elephants are slow AF though. I'd be more worried about a rhino or hippo.

For the record, adult african elephants can run up to 25 mph and in case you didn't know, that's faster than Bolt's 100 meter run.

                Anonymous

Read the literature, elephants have only ever been recorded as running up to ~20mph with most of them running 18mph or less as maximum speeds. Usain Bolt reaches 27mph at his top speed.
                https://journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/209/19/3812/16362/The-locomotor-kinematics-of-Asian-and-African

You will be unable to find a source for the often quoted "25mph" that shows up as the first google result. It's a meme that has become widespread from poor early estimates.

Unless you're arguing there's quadrupeds that are slower than humans, I guess that's technically correct if you consider animals like tortoises, but the vast majority of quadruped mammals run faster than humans, excepting elephants because they're way too fricking big.

Lions are ambush predators to moron. And there are many tribes who kill Lions with spears.

The Maasai are litteraly the best Lion hunters in the world
        >Metekai explained that teenage boys in his tribe are given the opportunity to prove they are ready for adulthood by going out into the wild and killing a lion. The purpose of the ritual is for the 15- to 18-year-olds to prove that they are ready to handle trials and tribulations they will face as adults.
