Aren't Allosauroids the sauropods specialists? I figured half the reason they disappeared in the late cretaceous was because sauropods became less widespread.
Meanwhile in America at least it feels like we have at least one genera of ceratopsian to pair with any given tyrannosaur, and it makes sense for tyrannosaurus to become so strong when it's environment was full of armored prey.
All that being said I have no clue how any of these theropods hunted. Like, what makes a sauropods specialist a sauropod specialist? Were cutting teeth and more robust arms involved?

      Anonymous

allosaurus was is the one we know the most about, and its really strange compared to other theropods like tyrannosaurs, rather than have a killing bite, it skull is made to withstand heavy impacts, along with its mouth being able to open to about 90 degrees, a really strong neck, its theorized it just jammed it head down really fast and shear chunks of flesh off.
robust arms arent really useful for large prey, because the mouth is the killing tool, robust arms are much more useful if the theropod is going after prey that is smaller than itself, in the case of dilophosaurus that had really maneuverable arms and the holotype had incredibility fricked up arms, and by the fact that allosaurus fossil generally had fricked up arms and feet, which meant that they were fighting a lot of prey with their hands and feet
it also got into a lot of fights with stegos
an adult sauropod is basically like a giraffe, most predators arent going to go after them, but tyrannosaurus is fricking huge and it has a bone shattering bite, which is what you need if youre going after sauropods since they can survive getting bodied by them and kill them very quickly

        Anonymous

        >it skull is made to withstand heavy impacts
Honestly, this is like so many other suspected adaptations in dinosaurs. It's probably a misinterpretation of anatomical features and because one paper was written on it now it's holy doctrine forever.

          Anonymous

except they a did a study on its skull structure with engineering, which was to prove an even older theory of it using its neck muscles to kill rather than its jaws, likes sabertooth tigers which also had weak and gaping jaws and a strong neck, but allosaurus doesnt have saber teeth, it has relatively small teeth, along with another study into its neck musculature showing it could move its head really fast and hard vertically, so yeah its a pretty good hypothesis that allosaurus was jamming its head downward on things really hard

            Anonymous

Yes, I'm quite sure a theropod was running around headbanging like a fricking moron to kill sauropods. What the frick happened to critical thinking or skepticism in science? That's what USED to separate it from religion. They're basically the same thing now. We used to have the scientific method. Now someone just publishes something that sounds sciencey and everyone believes it without question or trying to test whether it's even correct.

              Anonymous

You're choosing to interpret the information in the goofiest / most moronic possible way (something hipster twitter paleoartists are also extremely guilty of mind you). It mostly indicates that an Allosaurus bite would have been more of a whole head strike, rather than a stationary head using pure bite force. Allosaurus CAN (though of course, that doesn't mean it did) open its mouth considerably wider than other theropods. While this has practical applications in terms of like, actually being able to bite bits off of a large sauropod carcass, I imagine it would also make sense in this context of striking with the head, letting its teeth engage on the prey item during the strike.
We obviously do have to speculate a lot here, we're trying to infer behaviour from bones. "it has strong neck muscles, small teeth, and a wide gape, what does this say about how it hunted and fed". But it's an animal, not a robot, we can only assume these features evolved because they were useful to it though.
I think some other theropods like Carnotaurus also have an exceptionally strong neck, but obviously the head shape there is so wildly different from Allosaurus its hard to compare. Like yeah, they both have relatively large (albeit to extremely varying degrees) horns in front of their eyes, but I don't think these served any hunting purpose.

            >so yeah its a pretty good hypothesis that allosaurus was jamming its head downward on things really hard
To me (just an interested layman for what it's worth) it seems more likely that it would lunge its neck forward (visualize a snake strike almost) or even upwards at taller prey (like a sauropod) with open jaws, bite down, and then explosively yank the neck backwards, raking off big nasty chunks of flesh and maybe even scraping bone, depending on where it landed a bite.

that works for dead flesh, but that doesnt explain why its skull is that way, like most raptors today feed like that today, hold down meat with the legs, bite down on something and pull upwards, but it doesnt explain why its skull is weird, it should have a stronger bite, its mouth shouldnt be able to open that wide, its teeth should be larger, thats why i said its really weird
i also feel like ripping flesh when the animal is alive where skin involved should be a lot harder to do because i would assume a sauropod has thick skin, like an elephant, and wouldnt just a stronger bite and larger teeth be better, because you just bite down and the teeth would be able to dig even deeper and pull flesh off easier when using the whole body to pull it off

    >1v1
I'd assume that a Grizzly would go for a pin, which means that if it can grapple the neck & shoulders then the Raptor would be grounded; however, if the Raptor manages to flank the Bear or do enough damage with its legs in the pin then the Bear could easily be evicerated or exsanguinate. Honestly? It's a tossup. They both are equal sized megapredators that dominated their respective ecosystems. It'd be fun to watch, but I highly doubt one would always win over the other.

If the bear tries to do it’s stand up grapple maneuver, the raptor is going to be in absolute ideal spot to kick the bear in the stomach a la cassowary or the ostrich that almost killed Johnny Cash. If that foot long claw hits the bears stomach, it is going to be disemboweled.

I'm honestly going with tossup too, maybe slightly favoring bear. if the bear manages to pin the raptor to the ground or gets a good enough swipe in to break a leg/jawbone then the Raptor gets rekt. it doesn't look like much but

that little b***hslap at around 8 secs carries enough force to take your head off. that said getting the raptor on its back could potentially work in the raptors favor for the same reason you don't pin a feline that way (you get gutted by razor feet).

do we know if Utahraptor had a strong enough bite force to actually get through the bears hide? if it turns into a face biting match then bear might again have an advantage. idk if smaller dromaeosaurs bit each others faces to fight like T-Rex did.

        Anonymous

What makes you think Utahraptor is some pathetic pushover who is incapable of producing more than a meek punch? You think that gay little swipe is lethal, wait until you see what happens when a foot long knife is jabbed into your body by legs with muscles more powerful than anything on a bears body. A bear is just not equipped to deal with the arsenal of weapons possessed by dinosaurs. No mammal is.

          Anonymous

why are you assuming bears are these big lumbering dumbasses that have no means of defense besides "big and mean"?

          >wait until you see what happens when a foot long knife is jabbed into your body

and how exactly is said knife getting stabbed into said body? again, if the bear pins the fricker down by the head it can't really do much besides flail unless the bear is moronic and lets it get on its back (at which point bear catches claws to face/chest/wherever and gets rekt). if raptor gets a free ambush strike from behind (like they're thought to do as ambush hunters), then of course it fricking wins because that's its entire strength. which brings me to another point I haven't seen brought up yet in this hypothetical 1v1
          >endurance
bears will literally fight each other like in that webm for a good hour at a time, often sustaining quite a bit of damage in the process (at least the loser does). assuming neither animal pussies out (unlikely unless they're both tossed in a cage and in 100% no-holds barred 1v1 square the frick up mode) then it really is gonna depend on how the fight opens up. if bear can pin the raptor and clamp down somewhere on its back/head then said raptor doesn't really have the leverage to land a solid kick without risking fricking itself up as well. not sure on how long the bear needs to keep it pinned until it tires, however.

this fight wouldn't really have a clear winner if both sides really wanted the other dead.

Take into account how much damage a dinosaur can do vs something like a lion. Lions and most modern predators suffocate the prey. An allosaur could cut an elephant's trunk off in one swipe with its huge talons, leap right up onto its back. Dinosaurs were taking on much more formidable prey than elephants. Elephants have no tail, no armor, which is fine when the worst thing you'll ever face is a tiger or smilodon or something but an allosaurus would probably tear any elephant that's ever lived to fricking pieces.

if it had hollow bones, it really doesn't stand a chance against the kodiaks or polar bears. i doubt it has the physical power of like a similar sized crocodile or mammal.

also, the "that's not what the claws were used for" is bullshit too. an animal doesn't think tactically in combat. they swing their weapons and try to kill what they're fighting before they get too damaged because damage could lead to them dying.

      >also, the "that's not what the claws were used for" is bullshit too. an animal doesn't think tactically in combat. they swing their weapons and try to kill what they're fighting before they get too damaged because damage could lead to them dying.
It's not 'The animal meticulously thought about using its available weapons for this precise strategy'.
It's 'The claws were literally incapable of slashing through flesh, moron'.
Piercing, sure. But disemboweling with them is a fantasy.
As should be obvious to anyone whose brain isn't entirely smooth. The biomechanics of a giant, sickle-shaped claw on a toe don't exactly scream 'MAXIMUM POWER!'.
Pic related. That's the damage tiger claws do. While smaller, they're also in a biomechanically more convenient position. That's against unprotected human skin, not scaly ornithischians ten to a hundred times the weight of a human.

Utaraptor had proportionately the 2nd smallest and least curved sickle talon among eudromeosaurs after Adasaurus. It was most likely impractical for restraining prey and would most likely be used only for slashing and maiming.

cannot slash, i would ask you to hop in the pen with an ostrich, emu, or cassowary.
just because a claw isn't bladed like a knife, doesn't mean it can't slash. the cassowary's claw has a flat edge on the bottom side, and it will still tear your stomach open.

johnny cash was once cut open by an emu or ostrich, it spilled his guts out and he almost died.

hollow bones doesnt actually mean anything, only midwits think that. despite being hollow a lot of the time that meant that theyre denser than other animals of a similar size because you need stiff and strong bones to actually fly, IF they kept their bone density relative to their body weight, their bones would be much stronger than a grizzly of equal weight

Yes, if they got up in close quarters with each other the bear would probably wrestle the raptor to the ground and tear it apart. The bear would probably be maimed in the process, though. Problem is that Grizzlies outweigh utahraptors by a lot. Utahraptor got to be roughly around 600 pounds.

To give it credit, it was thought to reach pretty much twice that in older studies, and hey we don't really have much fossil material of it published yet(?) and not the first time some dinosaurs have made massive leaps in possible weight. If it was the older weight I'd say 50/50 cause Utah was built like a truck compared to all dromaeosaurs.

But from what I know, Utah gonna get rekt.

So are wolves, but that doesn't mean one could go one-on-one with a grizzly. Also, they were killing dinosaurs, which might have been relatively easy to kill (weak bones, highly stressed metabolisms like birds, maybe). Terror birds seem to have been fricked as soon as modern mammal carnivores started competing with them, so that's one data point indicating that therapods aren't as fearsome as equivalent mammals (but then again, terror birds had to go through a weird evolutionary pathway, so maybe the original version was superior).

                >they were killing dinosaurs, which might have been relatively easy to kill (weak bones, highly stressed metabolisms
                ??? what ?
again, porous bones =/= weak bones
the bones would be a lot more scry and pliable, like a young child's bones which have a lot more give vs an adult's bones which are more ridged and brittle
also terror birds were birds, dinosaurs had arms and a tail
mammalBlack folk are honestly fricking pathetic
dinosaurs lived objectively more violent lives than modern day animals
dinosaur bones are almost always covered in scratches and breaks (that healed), a crocodile or bird can get its leg bit off and be perfectly fine, if a lion fractures its leg it's fricking over
again, all these non-arguments just seem politically motivated, like rather than having the discussion, there is an ulterior motive to shitposting and derailing the thread that has nothing to do with bears or dinosaurs

A utaraptor talon is bigger than a bear's head. How on Earth are you comparing them to wolves right now. Can wolves leap 10x their height? Can a bear even jump at all?
The dinosaur wins and I truly don't see how the bear could. Even if the raptor wasn't hunting the bear and they just ran into each other and the bear wanted the raptor dead, the raptor could just leave and there would be nothing the bear could do. Bears would just be walking picnics to predators back in the times of dinosaurs.

Terror birds were ABSOLUTELY the cucked version of theropods, don't even "maybe"ize this point.
It's like if sneks developed the ability to walk again by reusing some strange genetic skin cancer mutation that allows them to walk on mole-stalks.
That is how it was with terror birds. They didn't have teeth or arms. In general they were tiny, as birds evolved from cousins of dinosaurs with names like "microraptor", which should tell you everything you need to know.

A dinosaur is just a whole different beast than a tiger or bear. It has a crocodile head, swords on its hands and feet and can leap like 30 feet into the air. A utahraptor could just leap up onto an elephant's back and stick its nails in its spine, a bear would be absolutely fricked.
There's a reason why dinosaurs were basically dragons covered in armor and spikes and scutes.
Look at an iguanodon. Relatively low power-level as far as dinosaurs go, but it could defend itself from a raptor attack. It has arms with spikes on its hands as weapons, and a gigantic tail swinging around like a giant crowbar to defend its flanks.
I'm just imagining how a bear v utahraptor fight would go down.
The raptor would either ambush the bear in which case it would be over before it began.
Or if the bear saw the raptor coming, the bear will probably stand on its hind legs and try to intimidate the other animal, or maybe do some mock charges at it, and then the raptor will cover the distance between them in one jump and stick its talons 2 feet deep right into the bears chest or back, I don't see another way this could go.

            >get disembowled with a single kick by the larger animal
That's not what the fricking claw was for dipshit. Raptor Prey restraint theory is the overwhelmingly favored view on the usage of the sickle claw.

Maybe for 30 lb velociraptor, not huge macropredators like Utahraptor. Whatever the frick you think you know about raptor functional morphology prob doesn't apply to Utahraptor

Reality doesn't work the way you seem to think it does. And I'm not talking about the minutiae of how raptors used their claws, "dipshit".

Utaraptor had proportionately the 2nd smallest and least curved sickle talon among eudromeosaurs after Adasaurus. It was most likely impractical for restraining prey and would most likely be used only for slashing and maiming.

What a dumb fricking statement. It was for kicking. Birds kick. Raptors leapt onto prey driving the claws in. Why the frick do you think they were so good at jumping and had literal wings on their arms for?
Let me guess, t-rex was a scavenger of nuts and berries and didn't eat meat.

anon we live in a world where fricking badgers and wolverines can scare the frick out of lions and bears. Im more than willing to believe an adult grizzly could destroy a raptor on that merit alone. I mean frick, ever seen those videos of hippos and elephants bodying crocodiles? you underestimate your fellow warm bloods.

And what makes you think that the animal that lived an objectively more violent life wouldn't be just as aggressive? Dromaeosaurids were also endothermic, so maybe you should actually try to understand that word before you say anything even more stupid.

A wolf-sized sable could probably curbstomp a bear.

I mean, scaled up? yeah I'm with that other anon. a timberwolf sized marten would likely body the average bear. hell, wolverines chase off bears frequently.

Correct. Pine martens already frick up bears frequently so yeah, a bear-sized marten vs a bear, the bear stands no chance

If you call a Utahraptor a "bird" you also need to call a whale a "monkey", because the genetic distance is about the same, +20 million years on the dino side.
