This sort of question has always seemed kind of dumb to me. Why bother trying to raise the intelligence of something that's not exactly that smart when you could raise the intelligence of something that's already pretty high up there like say, other apes, cetaceans, elephants, or corvids?

I doubt this would work but yes it should be tried

heavy, heavy doubt though. There are several breeds bred for intelligence, at least ability to learn tricks, which is our only decent way of measuring that, and I don't see any of them being any smarter than wolves. They are just more obedient.

I'm not against the general idea.
    My concern is the hardware.
Animals with human IQ would get interested in many abstract concepts and eager to express themselves.
    But,
they'd have no mouth to produce various sounds when they understand languages.
they'd have no sensitive fingers when they want to write or draw valuable ideas.
Giving intelligence without appropriate bodies can considerably lower their QOL.

Dogs will simply invent a new communication method.

Dogs are already capable of word recognition, and they don’t seem to mind not communicating through words. I suspect that a dog raised to human intelligence would specialize in body language and possibly calligraphy or something.

I’ll allow it under one condition. None mate with members of similar ancestry, and also please don’t give pugs intelligence, they already know they’re suffering but if they knew who made them suffer, I’d never forgive humanity.

The chinese would be 100% on board. They wouldn't do any of the work though, they'd just steal a few litters once it was done and then mass farm them

We struggle making a dog that can live longer than wolves, I'm dubious of their ability.

well it would prove that low intelligence is absolutely hereditary while high intelligence mostly isn't. That should be fun.

If it succeeds in spite of that fairly obvious problem, it will next prove that high intelligence is a handicap to fecundity and longevity. Which should also be fun.

but we already know these things from humans. Only the very uninformed think we need to prove it again with some other species. It's usually the fairly stupid that think stupidity isn't a survival trait and that high intelligence is an improvement over a condition of relative happiness through ignorance and delusion.

Highly intelligent people consistently score higher on appearance and attractiveness than you.

they choose not to reproduce as often or as soon as dumb people. This is partly because dumb people don't generally have a choice. Even if they know about birth control they're not going to think to use it. Or they have a culture that discourages it.

creating an animal that could be criminally liable but would have a most a tenuous grasp on language would be cruel in the world we live in.

Intelligent dogs would no longer be suitable as pets because now when you're walking around pantsless at home and your dog sees you you can know with 100% certainty that it's silently judging you.

It seems cruel to do that do an animal that we couldn't even properly communicate with
At least do it to animals like apes or monkeys who actually could speak if they had the brainpower
