Why isn't there more Blue Whale media online? We should attach a live-streaming camera to each of these frickers and monitor their lives, see what they do

They're surprisingly hard to track for how big they are.

I don't understand, is there some barrier to gps tagging them?

GPS doesn't work well underwater because the frequencies get absorbed, and battery life is a bottleneck.

Uh what would be the point in seeing what a whale does all day? Spoiler alert! They just swim and eat food and poop. Humans and their insatiable curiosity is truly maddening. What do you hope to witness by putting a camera on a whale?! It's stupid and pointless! We certainly do not get up to anything you all need to be concerned about and they definitely do not have undersea conferences to determine the fate of the landwalking degenerates. So it's just pointless to even bother with the nonsense, there's way more interesting things to waste your time on. There is nothing in the vast expanses of the ocean! Nothing!

Do blue whales even acknowledge swimming humans? Would a whale truly offer assistance if a man is drowning or did Avatar 2 lie to me?

A blue whale is like 4x as big as an African bull elephant. It wouldn't even notice you.

Blue Whales behave as if they are on a different plane of existence. They may look at you briefly, but they won't try to interact.
Right Whales and Humpback Whales are far more curious of humans and might save you if they understood you were in trouble.

They're very elusive as it is, so even getting a specimen to tag would be difficult. Then you have to actually transport the data from the camera to a device, which y'know, there's no signal out in the ocean. Not to mention the ungodly amount of money it would require. Very cool idea in theory, but impossible to actually go through with

      >regular blue whale migrations off of Monterey Bay, New Zealand, Australia
      >start research
      >tag blue
      >leave
      >cam automatically detatches after 48 hours or so and floats to surface
      >collect it
      >download data
Why do you post bullshit? We have aerial footage of juvenile blue whale from Monterey Bay, meaning they're regular visitors. Such tag cameras have been in use for sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins and I think cuvier's beaked whales for two decades now. The chip with the footage will just be removed and you review the footage in your office. The only challenge here is finding an investor, usually the station you work at pays for your research but you have to apply first so it can get green lit and there's a certain risk to all that.

        >I for one would enjoy footage of blue whale bulls fighting,

I didn't know they fought, are there any good videos of this? Typing in "blue whale fight" just gives me videos of orcas hunting one and a single above water shaky cam vid of two bulls fighting over a mate. Surprised there doesn't seem to be any quality footage of this given how closely we monitor whales.

I don't know it it's true. We know males of various mysticeti species sing to determine who's bigger and stronger. But sometimes, humpback whale bulls fight so unless I have footage to disprove it, I'll assume blue whale bulls fight with massive fluke slaps or ramming the opponent by lifting themselves out of the water and dropping onto them.
Head ramming is, by the way, not possible for them because their jaws are so fragile. Blue whales also have an organ between the tips of their lower jaws that helps them determine a bait ball density and if it's even worth opening their gigantic maws for it. They use up a lot of energy to fill their mouths and press out the water. If the bait ball is not big enough to over compensate that energy loss, the whale won't even bother with it.

It bugs me people are often so fond of dinosaurs just because of how big they were, but they ignore the blue whale which is not only bigger than any of them, but still alive today. It's a silly mentality like this where people think that just because they aren't fighting and killing each other that makes them 'boring.'

Do we even have any footages of them hunting those giant squids?

No footage; just lots of giant suction scars on sperm whale hides.

I did a quick search but I can't remember what doco it was from. Reddit came up with this

            https://www.reddit.com/r/Showerthoughts/comments/3d0c4e/why_hasnt_anyone_strapped_some_cameras_onto_a/

            >"Actually, a few years back they did in fact attach a camera to a sperm whale.
            >The whale started diving, then stopped for no reason.
            >Within a few minutes another sperm whale swam right up to the camera to (to the point were all you could see is its huge eye) then preceded to ram the camera untill it was knocked off. Pretty amazing stuff"

So somebody else has seen it too. That post was from 8 years ago so it was from a doco at least a decade old.
