because rats are a plague, if they didn't serve a purpose as experimental subjects humanity would have made them go extinct decades ago

If you don't free roam your lab rats it's animal abuse.

My high school bio lab did. There was a "small mammal tech" building where live rats and mice for school experiments were kept in shoe box lookin' things on shelves. They were treated relatively fine.
We also had a marine lab building but I never took marine bio in high school so idk what animals they had.

Considering the school's endowment, this wouldn't be too big a surprise, but I doubt it. Probably just koi or some shit.

But it isn't, it should've been a temporary measure until it was more properly addressed. We have societal states with immense legal control over it's citizens, seven billion people, 4-5 billion of which are completely unneccessary, medical systems with have an extreme focus on critical care systems for sake of effective recovery, and there's still none who are willing to propose reformed legislation regarding what is and isn't allowed regarding human experimentation with the extremes being left to rats. How dissapointing, even more so that there isn't further cultural focus on organ harvesting of the dead, what little benefit could've been brought from that aforementioned bloat put to waste. It should be outsourced to picrel at this point.

It's a "necessary evil" where the benefits have been deemed to outweigh the cons. There are also policies that must be followed to limit animal suffering during testing instead of abuse through plain neglect or deliberate torture. Unless of course the experiment calls for neglect and torture.
