probably has almost everything to do with how cats communicate. they have complex vocal, body, and eye languages and that allows us to get information about them a lot quicker than other animals. the reason we can domesticate some animals so well is because we can understand them.
I don't know too much about red panda socialization and communication, but I'm willing to bet it is less perceptible to humans. Same reason why weasels or other small carnivores aren't more common pets.

Mustelids in general are pretty sociable and intelligent. It’s just that they’re still wild animals but if you raise them they’re pretty friendly

they are, and you can totally tame one
but they communicate lot more through scent glands, much more information where we can't access it with them vs cats and dogs

They seem like fake creatures designed by a team of Japanese artists to make for the perfect companion/accompanying toy line for an adventuring Anime princess. Optimized to be adorable in almost every possible way.

Sometimes they seem too good to be true. The only downside is they can smell pretty bad with the scent marking they do

    >cats
    >fricking every where, eat rodents ams other small critters
    >red pandas
    >only live in small part of asia, eat plants
I sure can't figure out why we have pet cats instead of pet pandas.

      >eat rodents
you mean half-eat a few of them and then go hunt some birds and take a nap while the rodent population explodes out of control

however the scent of mammalian predators alters wild rodent scavenging behavior so idiots think the rodents are actually gone, which is why cats were allowed to stay - prior to the 20th century 99.9% of humans were actual idiots instead of just 50%.

Do "cat people" ever get sick of spreading disinfo ike "cats were domesticated because they eat rodents" when they provably do nothing to control pest populations?

Cats self domesticated because they are unobtrusive and can eat from our garbage piles. Especially the house sparrows.

Why are birdgays so prone to mental illness? Does anyone have a scientific explanation for this?

Literally every farm I've ever worked at had a population of wild cats.
