        This but unironcially.
And whoever said people have lost their Faustian spirit was dead on. No one has a sense of wonder or natural curiousity anymore, and sadly it's not even limited to zoomers. Even in this very thread, on a nature board no less, we have people saying
        >lol frick the ocean it's boring and there's nothing there
Like, why even post on a board like this if that's how you feel?

Anti-intellectualism is the trend in american culture. You are to obey the state sanctioned intellectuals who were picked out by the megacorps and humanitarians, but doubt the value of everything else.

Believing there are megalodons and leviathans in the ocean depths is like believing in aliens. Except alien believers are seen as conspiracy nuts and freaks, while giant sea monster believers are seen as relatively valid, due to general populace's low level of knowledge on the subject. Which I guess ironically validates the idea that we don't know a lot about the ocean.

Not alien believers, only people believing they are visiting us.

This, in all likelihood there's aliens out there, but they're probably AT BEST as advanced as us. And that's being super charitable, chances are our introduction to alien life will be some tiny mindless blobs floating around in some exoplanet's ocean. Interesting, but admittedly kind of boring.

Also lets not ignore the fact that these species live in extreme depths, where if they are found near the surface where humans might be they are either dead or very close to dead. Thalassophobia is just the grown up version of Nyctophobia (fear of the dark).

There are a lot of fears that can be linked to the sea, the fear of open an wide spaces and the fear of suffocating as well.

Remember kids, the ocean is 95% unexplored. So a surface dwelling, sight oriented, warm water shark that required enormous numbers of large prey is definitely living down there in the cold, dark, barren abyss

Thallasophobia is for idiots who still believe in sea monsters. Biggest thing you're conceivably going to run into out there is a sunfish. Whales stay away and sharks want nothing to do with you.

it annoys me how when people say that less that one nanogorillionth of an ocean has been explored, they do it to imply that there are heckin' giant Leviathanerinos lurking in the depths that will totally come and eat you if you ever get lost at sea. When in reality it's probably nothing cool like that and most of the unexplored stuff will only be of interest to marine biologists because it's something like 357 billion different subspecies of plankton we don't know about.
