This little shit got out the ither day and I was sure someone had picked him up with thr intent to keep him. Got him back though. Weirdest thing- the lady said she heard something scratching late morning, disregarded it for the cat. When she noticed the cat almost half an hour later, she decided to go check what the sound was. It was our dog at her door, scratching for over 30 minutes to be let in. Her house was 2 blocks down and looked nothing like ours. When she opened the door he bolted in and she was flabbergasted. So strange.

His mother looks happy here. Pretty cute. Our oldest would have been devastated too. I was sad but was meh. Even though his mom (Pepita) always seems a bervois wreck, she definitely knew he was gone. 14 fucking hours before I realized he was gone, kek, and got him back by the next morning.

In general, people love chihuahuas because they're fiercely loyal and love their favorite person, which is why they do best with only one owner. They also think they're the size of a great dane and can defend the house from any threat

I spent 6 months on a chihuahua farm (long story, don't ask). Responsible breeders will breed them for non-aggression. The problem is that too many puppy mill style breeders have no fucking idea what they are doing and don't breed them responsibly.

Every chihuahua I've ever met was pretty chill.
Just don't get the tea cup variety.

      Anonymous

There's not really such a thing as a teacup. It's just a marketing term with no standard. There are two heads shapes (dder and apple), and the apples tend to be called teacups, but it's a mislabelling.
Chis are dogs, and act like dogs. They have personalities, and it's hard not to spoil them.

My idiot half borhter dropped his unwanted dog off on me in the middle of the night, saying he was going to drop it at the gate of the local animal shelter if we didn't want it. He's a peice of shit, but we took the dog.
The dog and I didn't bond until much, much later when my mother and dad were sitting around. They didn't attend to their animals, and one was whining. I kept thinking, "maybe, just maybe Christine will peel herself off breitbart, and get off her dead ass."
Didn't happen, and the whining got louder.
I went to look for the source, and it turns out the chihuahua was trapped between the front door of the house and a glass storm door. The poor dog was in an oven basically.
I grabbed her, threw chairs and the rest of Christine's hoarder shit out of the way and jammed the poor dog under the sink. She was hot as hell, dry, heaving, and not in a good state.
I wish I had gotten to her sooner. I was just hoping that lazy bitch would do something, anything, for once in her miserable life. I didn't know what was happening. If I had known I wouldn't have waited.
Only then does Christine lumber out of her room, demanding to know what the noise is, stinking like menthols.

So, the chihuahua and I bonded. My chicken nugget became hers. My blankets were her blankets. And for years she basically was carried like a baby and wanted for nothing. When she was old, and lost her teeth, her nuggets were minced up.
      I really miss her.

New world dog breeds were fed corn and eaten as food, we should be happy that they are functionally exctinct. Chihuahuas have around 1% of their DNA.

They are not bad dogs, just people loose their shit when a small dog reveals its nature beyond what they are excepted to be, plush toys, not a first time owner breed and they don't particularly care for cuddles or other forms of physical affection much like chows, which is hard to accept for people that get them to have something to baby, and after a lifetime of them having their boundaries disrespected they get fucked up mentally which is where you get the typical demon cunt chihuahua. I once had a chihuahua, he was mostly fine but his litter mates were complete psychos and I have to assume because they were bought as gifts for kids. I wouldn't get one again though, too standoffish and anxiety-ridden for me.

Poor breeding and bad ownership. Chihuahuas aren't a breed for novice owners but a lot of novice owners get them because they are small and appear easy. And because they are small and appear non-threatening many of those novice owners encourage bad behavior and even aggression.
If you know dogs and have experience with dogs Chihuahuas are great if you want a mini dog for whatever reason

I disagree. A WELL BRED chihuahua actually make for great first dogs. They're small, healthy, and generally low maintenance dogs. They don't have long coats to be brushed every day or high energy you need to accommodate for. They're intelligent enough to learn basic manners but not so intelligent they need jobs like some breeds.
      They're quintessential companion dog.

The problem is when people who shouldn't have any dog, regardless of breed, see poor chis and think it'll be like having a stuffed toy. Obviously it's not.

Is this true? So I'm looking for a small dog as my first dog, (gf has had several, but a chi would be my own).
I told all my family I want a chi and they all yelped they didnt want to hear it yapping. Also my family comes from a country where dogs are work animals and not pets, so most of my family are terrible pet owners so their "yapping" view of chis can be skewed.

I want to be able to do stuff with my dog, take it around, and be an outdoor companion.

I am NOT talking about taking them to cafe's and letting them sit for hours while i chat, or taking them to the mall because I can,

I'm talking more like, if I'm going for a walk, I can take the dog, or if I am visiting family, I'll take the dog.

I think Wauf might be able to point me in the right direction, but I want a small dog I can do stuff with. I also have a cat, so I want something she can bond with, she fell in love with my neighbors dog last place I lived.

Are there any athletic small dogs, that can go on hikes, but have a small footprint, I also live in an apartment so real dogs are sort of out of the question.

I'm willing to deal with the fact that chi's are not athletic, but only because they check all other boxes.

          miniature pinscher

            Anonymous

How are they with exercise? Like would a 5 miles hike in 80 degree weather be okay? I don't mind stopping frequently for breaks, as long as I can do a solid 5 miles. And 5 miles is a super short hike for me. Mini pins seemed like a smarter, more athletics but more snippy chi.

I have had small dogs for all my life, I have some experience with these breeds:

Miniature schnauzers: High energy guys that will be happy to go on hikes and do outdoor stuff but you have to deal with typical terrier retardation like barking at nothing and a high prey drive which makes their cat compatibility iffy, but if you introduce the cat to the puppy early as possible it shouldn't be that big of a problem. If you are planning on having kids they are just big enough not to be completely bully-able, but still small enough to be fit for apartment life.
One track mind dogs that are a but high strung but obedient.
Westies: Somewhat similar but a bit they have a bit more mild personalities,(the high prey drive drive still stands tho) and although i hear different from other owners I could never trust my boy to go off-leash during a walk, in case he spots a pigeon or something because he bolted at the first sign of a small animal. Fit for first time owners, they are likable and eager to please. For terriers, they are surprisingly good with cats.
Jack russels: They are as fit and athletic as small dogs get. Anklemunching, destructive, unpredictable. Only get them if you are patient and will put in the time to train them. For older kids. Got her a bit too old so this may not apply to all of them, as I did not start with a blank canvas. Idk about cats.
The most cat friendly breed I can think of is the pekingese, who are amusing, brainy little cunts but are single person dogs that will bond with one person and be assholes to everyone else. Not athletes.
For chis, mine was a small one so was she was not that fit for outdoor activities, but for a breed as numerous as chis you will have to look at what line you are getting a dog from, ask for pictures of the parents and ask about their body weight and lenth. Any breeder with a cutesy looking fb-page is a no go.Also, don't write off non pedigree chis, they will be the type most likely to fit your standards.

Thanks for this, jack Russel's I really like, but the idea of leaving them alone with the cat scares me.
I'd probably get a JRT if I didn't have a cat, very athletic dog that I could take on outdoor adventures.

100% I was also considering non-pedigree and mixed chi's. They are often cuter and healthier and more hardy. My dad has a really cute mix.

min pin and min pin mixes are great, clever, athletic, healthy little dogs that love warmth and can go all day on 15+ mile hikes easy
they have long legs and flexible spines compared to most small dogs which gives them endurance comparable to some of the larger athlete breeds
my first min pin died last year at the ripe age of 20
pic related was taken the day before he died
obviously im biased but i dont think theres a more genetically sound small dog out there
