Growth rates. The bird who survived the extinction who's the ancestor of all modern birds grew quickly and had offspring soon. That was a very advantageous tactic during those days.

The answer probably lies in a combination of things: their small size, the fact they can eat a lot of different foods and their ability to fly.
Its from your picture. Sorry im too lazy

They also had more efficient endothermic metabolisms, while most dinosaurs (except maybe other maniraptorans) would have been mesothermic.
However, birds also have extremely efficient unidirectional breathing with pneumatic pleurocoels, which means that they take oxygen into their body tissues when they breathe in and when they breathe out. They have very high rates of gas exchange. This means that, when there's a decline in atmospheric oxygen content, as there was in the period after the K-Pg extinction, birds should be able to survive better. However, the side effect of highly efficient gas exchange is that, when the atmosphere is more toxic, as it definitely was immediately after the asteroid impact, then birds are quicker to absorb toxic elements (including CO2) and die from them - eg canary in a coal mine. So bird breathing may have been a downside at certain times. Nevertheless, it seems like a combination of their endothermy, small size, generalist diets and ability to fly made modern birds the only avialan lineage to survive.

The bird clades that survived were pretty small and generalists so they could eat whatever scraps of food that they could find. Dinosaurs by this time period were for the most part fairly large (even the smaller clades were decently sized animals) and more specialized so more vulnerable to extinction. Add on to this that dinosaurs at this time seemed to be going through a phase of lower diversity due to some other natural frickery going on at the time and boom, they all dead.

If modern pigeons and crows and shit are any indication, it's because birds can be incredibly adaptable while non-avian dinosaurs were much more specialized.

disingenuous, there are other animals from dinosaur times which survive to this day. Crocodilians and turtles both predate the K/t boundary. plus lots of aquatic animals survived in pretty similar forms.

Synapsids have evolved beaks once, and that was fairly early on, when they were still basically reptilian.
Diapsids did it at least six times.

          platypus

All monotremes have beaks. Platypuses and echidnas.

Monotreme beaks are made of keratin A which is softer than keratin B. Also the beaks of turtles and birds are bones covered by a hard keratin sheath, whereas monotreme beaks are roughly outlined with thin bone and mostly comprised of soft tissue.

            Anonymous

Okay, and? Yes the materials for the beaks and the structures for the beaks are different, but monotreme beaks are still beaks.
Are you also going to make an argument that cephalopod beaks aren't beaks either even though they are functionally similar but made out of chitin instead?

              Anonymous

Cephalopod beaks and diapsid beaks both fill similar roles. Monotreme beaks are not used to bite or crush or do anything like that. Echidnas have fused jaws and platypus use plates in the back of their mouths to crush their prey. Their beaks are mostly just used for their electroreception and are thus not relevant when talking about mammals evolving beaks.

Yea, all toothed birds went extinct, and the more specialized beaked birds did too. The group that didn't was because of those traits
