The longer you repeat some nonsense that nobody disputes, the better it sticks.

Also lower IQ people are more prone to repeat and believe simple catchphrases without any logical reflection just to be part of a community

So apparently some pitbull excuser once tried to come up with some ridiculous excuse for pitbulls and came up with this. And it stuck.

If you get real family dogs it keeps the kids distracted, so I guess a joke about how it's the other way around mostly. Also sometimes older dogs will treat kids with parental instincts, but that just makes it more cute.

The concept of a "nanny dog" originates from Peter Pan. The story featured a dog called Nana who worked as a nanny. Nana was a Newfoundland dog.

The idea that pitbulls are nanny dogs originates from a 1971 New York Times article with the headline "A Breed That Came Up the Hard Way". A spokesman for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier club was talking about that breed, and she claimed they're known as "nursemaid dogs". This claim was later repeated and distorted until it evolved into its current form.

Yeah, and it's very interesting the pit breeders started pushing this notion around the same time when dog fighting was slowly becoming illegal. Most states had banned it in the 1960s and by 1976 it was illegal across the USA - so the breed, known for being the best dog fighting breed, needed and image revamp, and so they invented the "nanny dog" myth and started aggressively pushing it, in order to make pits and staffies etc seem palatable as a household pet, to keep up demand

Thd pittbulls probably started that myth themselves so they could get easy access to toddlers.

i think it wouldve been better had the mother died too, because now she has to live with the torment of being unable to protect her children from her dogs; haunted by the screams, i think suicide is going to happen

I'm not generally in favor of neutering, but pitbulls should not be bred, period. Neuter and spay every one of them by law.

Its far more likely its just a venomoid - they surgically remove the venom glands and replace them with silicone or glass beads. Still barbaric but you still have a snake in a month.

The New York Times in 1971 pushed the myth, from what I understand. I once read that in the early 1900's a rich couple had something published that started the myth, but I'm unable to find it now. Whatever the source, I think we can all agree that children are just delicious and it's probably their own fault for moving too quickly in my presence.

Fricking this, and the fact that more people don't understand this is baffling. I don't care what kind of dog it is, from chihuahuas to great danes, keep them away from frickin infants and toddlers.

Confusion with and interbreeding with mastiffs, which are highly possessive guard dogs, not fighting dogs.

However one drop of pitbull temperament ruins a dog forever.

that's probably bullshit but I'll believe it until I hear something better. I guess it depends on what you consider a guard dog a lot of people would probably consider a german shepherd or a rottweiler a guard dog. I always considered mastiffs an ornamental dog shits don't live long enough to be much else.

where did the nanny dog myth come from?

Nah, it was an intentional breed image revamp, invented around the time dog fighting was becoming illegal in the USA so the breeders needed families who didn't have their dogs fight to start viewing the breed as a great option for a friendly and lovable family pet, instead of the "most effective and lethal canine gladiator that ever existed, fearsome and fearless fighter" image the breed had at the time
