Where did the myth about if you let your cats outside they will decimate the local ecosystem and eat up at least 60 million birds alone?

Where did the myth about if you let your cats outside they will decimate the local ecosystem and eat up at least 60 million birds alone? I see everyone parrot this baseless claim.

Cat owners really are just as small brained as shitbull owners. I live in Australia and feral cats have destroyed our eco system. Additionally they are the sole reason toxoplasmosis exists, probably explains why cat owners are so moronic. Honestly cats especially in places like Australia should just be wiped out entirely, along with large dog breeds, it's just too damaging to the environment/ every cat owner I know is mentally ill.

Idk I let my cat out only during daytime but he never kills any birds, the only thing he ever catches is chipmunks like one every 3 months.
I've seen him chase turkeys but it's just playing and I'm pretty sure they are having fun, they're too big to be his prey and they know it.

no I live in the woods and my house is at the end of a cul de sac with just old people around so there's not really any risk there, just other wild animals so I make sure he is always inside well before dark. Not perfectly safe but neither is driving a car and I do that. I think he'd rather die than not go outside too.

      >He never brings me birds so he isn't killing them
Cats do that if you discipline them for doing it once. They just kill the bird and don't bring it to you. Literally every cat owner will say this but 9/10 they are wrong and the cat is infsct still killing birds. You should really stop letting your cat outside unsupervised. Atleast put a leash on it and walk it outside like a normal pet owner. You don't see homies with pet Pythons letting their snakes wonder around neighborhoods.

Nope, no bird killing going on. No evidence of it, never seen it and I see him outside 10 times a day. Usually lying under a tree or in a pile of leaves. He doesn't hunt, just opportunistically catches things that run on the ground. Including leaves.

          Anonymous

You don't see it hunt then obviously. Cats will literally hide the bodies if you've scolded them about bringing dead animals to you. Cats are little shit and you have a moral obligation to keep it supervised.

They do, but around here at least there's a fricking shit ton of birds so I think pets in general picking them off isn't a bad thing. My older cat's killed 3 with her fricking bell on in her life so if a bird is moronic enough to get itself caught by a large orange cat that makes noise every time she moves then it probably wasn't going to do too well in nature anyway.

    this paper here
    >https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms2380

basically they strapped a gopro camera on a cat and counted how many critters it killed. Then multiplied by the number of cats thought to live in the US and extrapolated over one year.

questionable methodology, but whatever. The important point is that a few billion birds killed isn't a significant number since 10 times that many die of old age every year.

    >Myth
It's true, but it's more complex than that. Cats only finish off the damage done by human development and other introduced species like rats (which cats live in harmony with rather than exterminating). Anything "driven to extinction by cats" was already doomed by humans fricking up their environment in many other ways. On the other hand, some "invasive species", like dogs and foxes, can actually be beneficial in tandem with others (lowered extinction rate) because they aren't lazy homosexuals and actually kill the rats (and the cats). You'll never hear about this one though, because canines also kill livestock which requires farmers to do their least favorite thing. Actually invest into their business and take care of their animals.

There ARE actual problems with outdoor cats. The first is a problem of ethics and personal responsibility. Cats are prey. Everything that is big enough to kill and eat them will try eventually. They are also really fricking dumb and worse at dodging cars than they think. The second is a problem of public health. Because of poorgays and morons who don't vaccinate and desex their pets, there are totally uncared for cats roaming around spreading rabies and disease. Toxoplasmosis kills 750 americans every year and exists entirely because of these uncared for ferals, often called "farm cats". Are they helping the farm? No. They are doing absolutely nothing but giving the moronic farmer an excuse to convince himself he doesn't have to do his least favorite thing. Actually invest into his business, maintain a clean facility, and take care of his animals.
