I have no issue with eating bugs, but the idea of replacing meat with them entirely doesn't make sense. Wouldn't the scale of operations needed to grow, harvest and process bugs as a full replacement end up producing the same amount of waste as meat farming? Only to produce one product, whereas a cow produces about a dozen or so things.

      Anonymous

I think part of the idea comes from the fact that bugs can be farmed in a cave whereas mammals require more space that is more specific and dependent on certain infrastructure.
The other part of the idea is that bugs are bugs and their welfare is... they're bugs who cares.

Beef and whatnot isn't going away. It will obviously be more and more expensive as supply struggles with demand. But humans in various parts of the world have pretty much always eaten bugs, so it only a matter of time before they make it to the menu in the rest of the world. As everyone points out, the difference between a locust (ironically for Wauf schizos locusts are popular to eat in Israel) and shrimp is pretty moot. If you eat shrimp but won't eat bugs you're just being silly.

Yeah, sure. I don't really care what anyone eats. I just find it silly when someone will eat one animal and not a very similar animal because "it's gross". Have more respect for people who don't eat stuff for religious reasons more than "it's gross" honestly.

Shrimps have meat inside them. You can remove everything and leave just the insides to eat. Everything is smooth and mellow.

Bugs, in the other hand, are hard and full of juices and goo. Not pleasant and we are naturally wired to be repulsed at the thought of eating them.

It's honestly concerning that adult people who think like this exist.
The only circumstances where you've seen the innards of an insects was when you crushed a live one on the floor.
If you crushed a live shrimp or cow in the same way they would be just as wet and slimy. Neither of those animals contain firm cooked meat while alive, gooey is the natural state of all living beings.

Personally I don’t think we should replace meat entirely, just add bugs to the equation. Bugs can eat plant parts that cows, chicken, pigs, etc can’t. For example the BSF mentioned before can grow on shit, food scraps, food industry waste, etc. I saw a guy growing them entirely on used coffee powder. Probably the ones being raised on used coffee powder alone aren’t as nutritious as the ones Eating food scraps but it shows how resilient they are. Another thing is that mammals and birds are warm blooded animals constantly using energy to produce heat but if it is too hot they use energy to cool themselves, this is a problem when you have a lot of animals in a confined space. Personally I think bugs will be added to food like how soya products are added to all sort of products nowadays. Back to BSF you can produce oil, protein, chitin (important for a series of industrial and laboratorial applications). The fat could be converted in biodiesel or food for human or animal consumption, protein also animal or human consumption, i have seen the whole bug dry being sold as animal food. Also soya products seems to have a negative effect on fish and carnivores so insect protein would be an improvement on pisciculture and pet food over soya.

Not a NWO agent, but people who have eaten bugs have said they taste like potato chips. They're also pretty easy to farm because they reproduce quickly and they'll eat pretty much anything.

I tried some crickets and they tasted like crackers. I really didn’t expect that eating something protein rich would taste like that.

Anyway we should eat bugs at least indirectly. We could raise black soldier fly on food waste and use these to feed chickens and we eat the chickens/eggs. They are rich in calcium and protein so we would need less grains to feed the chickens and reduce pollution from waste at the same time while producing fertilizer. Can raise black soldier fly on manure as well so we can make the whole system even more efficient. Those could also be used to other animals like pigs etc. could also be processed and separate the fat from proteins so we can balance the nutrients and make dry food instead of feeding them directly.

          >raise black soldier fly on manure
But you don't remove a bugs stomach contents before eating it, so wouldn't this be basically like eating the manure indirectly?

in the BSF lifecycle it will stop eating a few days before migrating to a drier location to become a pupae, so they empty their digestive tracts by themselves. This behavior is used on automatic harvesting systems. While they are edible and supposedly taste good I know people are put of by the idea of eating bugs so my proposal is to use them for animal feed. They could be used to make feed for any animal that would eat bugs normally like fish, birds and pig and probably should be safe for herbivores as well since they will eat animal protein if given the chance. They could be processed into pet food as well and probably will be better than all the grain they put on regular pet food.

              Anonymous

Also the adult doesn't need to eat. It can drink nectar or water but it won't lay on your food and puke gastric juices on it to drink digested food like regular flies nor it will fly around being a nuisance, their main focus is reproduction and they kinda look neat with their fake wasp looks

Do we really have to use pigs? They are as smart as dogs, although more selfish and driven, and taste like people. Maybe we can use a herd animal that weirdly likes dying instead? Sheep seem to basically kill themselves.

Bugs are always at least mildly anti-nutritious, calorie poor, and can not replace actual meat.

However they are LESS anti-nutritious than plant based foods, more calorie rich than plant based foods, and contain almost all of the same nutrients we need aside from some one offs mostly found in fruits, and have protein and roughage instead of just roughage.

Bugs actually replace salad. What did our ancestors eat?

I guess it depends on the bug. In BSF case it does all the eating in the larval phase so they store a lot of fat for the metamorphose and adult life making them not ideal to be used for animal nutrition without adding other stuff to balance the diet. This can be solved by processing them and separating the fat, some fat can be returned when making animal feed and the rest of the fat could be used to make biodiesel or human consumption. My personal guess not based on any study is that it would be a good food for egg laying chickens since it is rich in calcium and fat and those are two things the chicken need for making eggs

              Anonymous

Fat is good for you and contributes to what few calories bugs have.

It's the chitin that contains the most anti-nutrients in a bug so you don't want to eat the adults

                Anonymous

I did read some scientific papers and BSF are not ideal as the only food for the animals in the studies. The one I remember right now were frogs but I think I saw at least one more about a different animal. They are good as part of the diet but are not a balanced diet by themselves. processing them would allow to separate protein, fat and chitin and chitin have a wide range of uses so it wouldn't be a waste either. Also the mature larva have a thick carapace as well, these are some hardy babies.

What would china export? They are the ones buying soya, rice, corn etc from around the world. They do export adultered/spoiled/etc meat and dairy. I remember some years ago they were caught selling expired chicken meat so countries started buying from Brazil instead. Instead of taking the chance to dominate the market Brazil did the same selling chicken and beef adultered/expired and got caught as well a little latter. Stupid morons who only think on short term gain without realizing they are fricking the entire country and themselves in doing so.
