Just because crocs love eating hominins (anthropophagus and thonbjornsini or whatever in Africa eating erectines) does not mean they are relegated to predating upon more basal forms. Also, I'd argue that even in spite of the presence of floriensis and erectus genetic input on the population(s) of South East Asia, they're also intensely admixed with derived populations in places like The Philippines. Salties and Niles can eat anyone they want if they're near the water. If saltwater crocodiles lived in Oregon you can't tell me a bunch of muh epic white people would not be absolutely owned. Seriously though, what's the point of the autistic distinction of alligator and crocodile? Why can't we just call both crocodile and be done with. Alligators can be round-snout crocodiles or something like that.

Alligators survive freezing much better than crocodiles. So if you get eaten by a giant lizard in Minnesota in winter, we don't want to round up a mob and go kill innocent crocodiles.

I feel that the time is coming soon. Assuming the mahamba has gone extinct. You see, with burmese pythons and american alligators, both are known for eating smaller members of each others species. Therefore, assuming size is driving one to become larger then the other, both species will become larger over time, within environmental constraint that is. There is a size limit to all things, but homosexual Sapiens have made things smaller overall over time. Without them, nature can go fricking nuts.

I had no idea snakes actually killed that many people. I thought there hadn't been a snakebite death in Australia in years since antivenom became common, and I'd expect most deaths to happen there, if anywhere.

It's India (and other SEA countries)
Australian snakes, as venomous as they are, are not large and would rather flee than bite you
South-East Asia on the other hand, has
          >Largest Pythons, which are occasional man-eaters
          >Cobras, which are also large and sometimes stand their ground against humans
          >More than a billion third-worlders encroaching on their habitat

            > Australian snakes, as venomous as they are, are not large
Most are large - rivalling Cobras in size outside of a few exceptions like Death Adders. Most dangerous snakes here reach from 1.5 - 3m (Rough Scale, Taipans, Browns, Red Bellies, Tigers, etc). Size also tends to make a snake less dangerous, not more (due to being easier to spot and making it more difficult to infiltrate into urban areas) anyway.
            >and would rather flee than bite you
All snakes would. Not just Australian. Though it should be noted that Brown Snakes and Taipans have been recorded chasing people.
            > More than a billion third-worlders encroaching on their habitat
            This is the real issue.

            Pythons, which are occasional man-eaters
The only python in the region recorded to have eaten adult humans is the reticulated python, and that comes down to the fact that everyone there, especially the women, is short as frick. Even then, it's very rare. Python fatalities do occur a little more frequently, but again, not common. Most of the fatalities occur with venomous snakes.
, which are also large and sometimes stand their ground against humans
Sort of, but it also just comes down to your third point below, which is that these snakes are found in increasing numbers around human settlements. Also as the other anon pointed out, Russell's Viper is the biggest offender (in India at least). A lot of snake bites in India & SEA occur because these snakes are nocturnal, but Russell's viper in particular is more aggressive than other snakes. Kraits are also an issue in the region.
At the end of the day, the big issue is that everyone in those fricking countries walks around barefoot and without gloves or flashlights on hand at night. If they at least had boots and flashlights, these incidents would be cut down significantly.
