Whats the optimal age for dogs to get neutered?

What’s the optimal age for dogs to get neutered?
My Belgian Tervuren is kinda small, he’s only 45 lbs at 11 months old, and I’m trying to put it off as long as possible. Is there any significant difference between getting it done at 12 vs 18 vs 24 months old?

By neutering your dog you're effectively making him male in name only. When compared to others of his breed he will forever be a femboy by comparison.

There are pros and cons. I'd say 2 years at the earliest for larger breeds. Basically until they've completely grown up.

Dont do it anon. Your dog deserves to have his balls and not to be mutilated.

The narrative around neutering is simply false, outdated and supported with minimal, incomplete data. There are virtually no good reasons for doing it. No evidence suggests that neuting will solve any behavioral issues or health expectancy. Your dog will certainly get fat more easily and only think about food. He will be lazy, prone for diabetes and there is a chance his loss in testosterone may make him fearful and less balanced in character around other dogs/new situations. Unless you have a intact female dog in the same household there is literally no reason. And a daycare shure as shit is certainly not one eaither. Just because ever other owner in your area castrates or neuters does not make it right. Around my area (in Europe ) it is far more normal not to neuter and dogs are just fine. Learn to control your dog around other females (be strict about it) and ask if they are in heat when you meet other owners. Besides, if every female in your area is not intact (which seems to me the case) there is even less reason to neuter, cause who the frick should he impregnate?

If you irreversibly mutilate your dog simply for the sake of putting him into a daycare you do not deserve to own a dog. Also go frick yourself. Find a friend to look after him or hire a dog walk for fricksake.

yeah i'd never neuter a male dog, do you want a fricking troony eunuch dog or a bro? also mass neutering of good dogs has lead to pitbulls becoming a much larger share of the dog population same as white people not breeding.

i have a mal and hes 80 lbs; their size just varies i dont think theres anything wrong with your boy. i dont think you should ever neuter your dog, it really harms their health later in life. your boy will be more prone to cancer, joint issues, obesity, depression, dementia, agression, anxiety, etc. if you need to neuter him for behavioral issues then maybe he isnt the one for you. instead of doggy day care maybe try fencing up a large portion of your backyard so he has room to run around and do his business when youre gone. if you have stupid neighbors maybe the barking would be an issue but if not he'd probably be fine. a good metal fence and a shed would probably cost less than doggy day care in the long run. just make sure he has water, toys, and shelter such as a shed.

I would wait until it's about 18 months just to be safe anon. Just so long as he's fully developed.

It depends on when you want your boy to get fat and lose bone density. Neutering should only be done if their sexual behaviors become intolerable. Most owners do it just because they're lazy or too stupid to think for themselves. Are you one of them?

No decent doggy day care takes non-neutered adults

Don't use a fricking doggy day care. It's hard to imagine a more ridiculous service.

why the frick would you leave your dog at a daycare? if you live alone and spend a lot of time outside you simply DON'T have pets

It's a dog, not a toddler, you don't need doggy day care. Your furbaby can figure how to shit and piss outside just fine without you being there to observe it 100% of the time. If you don't have enough time to exercise a dog and are relying on doggy day care to take care of it for you, then you really weren't ready for a dog. Not to mention all the bad behaviors your dog could learn from the handlers.

Do you think 18-24 months is an acceptable age for these effects to be minimized?

        Anonymous

No. Try 4-6 years depending on how long you expect them to live. Neutering removes hormones necessary for healthy bones, joints and muscles regardless of age. Problems might not develop until they're starting to suffer from other issues if you neuter late enough, but 24 months ain't it.
If you have to neuter that young for a personal reason, then accept that you're compromising on their health to fit your chosen lifestyle.
