What modern day reptile can converge on the same evolutionary pathway as archosaurs?

birds and crocs are too derived now. none of them would be able to evolve to resemble the most basal archosaurs.

          Anonymous

crocs are still basal enough, they're fairly close to the presumed ancestors of dinosaurs.

birds are too far gone, but convergence could conceivably produce something that looks similar if the environmental pressures were exactly right. It won't happen, because those pressures won't be right, but it could.

how about maybe they fricked immediately after hatching and then stored sperm for the next 20 years until they were ready to reproduce?
That answer is stupid and wrong, but is it sufficient?

what if they have 30 foot long prehensile penises? Or a pterosaur adapted to feed on sauropod sperm and then spread their semen like pollen to the females? Maybe they walked into lakes and the males spawned like salmon while the females absorbed random lake sperms?

what exactly is sufficient to you, oh crazy person?

my favorite idea is that the males were capable of ejaculating distances of up to a mile with pinpoint accuracy. You know, just shooting females right in the pussy with some high power cum shots.

A hardened plug forms as a spear like tip, encased within a dissolvable sack attached to the spear is 1 gallon of sperm. The male sauropod shoots this Sabot of sperm right in their pussy.

What if the eggs could absorb sperm and the dudes just blasted jizzum all over the eggs. Impregnating them and providing a sticky and protective barrier against giant ants, scavengers, and the elements.

or maybe the males spread sperm as a fine mist into the air like giant cum geysers. The females walked backwards into the cum cloud and absorbed sperm from the air?

              so many possibilities

Selective pressure made them highly resistant to predation just by being huge and the long neck let them efficiently forage for preferred food without expending extra energy.

      >just by being huge
      were they born that big?

No. Eggs have a hard size limit at a little larger than Elephant Bird egg size because of gas permiability issues. But a 100 ton egg layer that lays 10 kilo eggs can lay a LOT of 10 kilo eggs. This is why Sauropod dominated ecologies have so many mega-carnivores able to co-exist, Sauropods were birthed in vast quantity and grew so fast that the land was thick with meat in a way that even people who experienced the American Bison boom of the 18th and 19th centuries would find difficult to comprehend.
Perhaps one in 10,000 grew large enough to be safe from Giganotosaurus and his ilk, but a mature female may have laid 500-1000 eggs per year for decades.

Higher carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere not only dramatically increased vegetative growth, but the greenhouse effect (I think the average global temperature was nearly 30 Celsius?) created an almost globally perpetual growing. Both of these qualities made unfathomably massive, fast growing, herbivores a viable way of life since they never knew scarcity or famine.

Furthermore, the animal had a couple physiological adaptations that permitted this insane growth. One was it was cold-blooded; gathering ambient temperature to heat and cool it's body, it didn't have to expend calories on heating it's massive body. Sauropods, despite appearances, also had hollow bones like a bird that were filled with air-pockets; making them significantly lighter without compromising strength or durability.

      >High CO2 and warming increased plant growth
first time in 15 years I've seen an intelligent answer on this topic here.

if you want to go a bit deeper consider that increased plant productivity due to high CO2 and longer growing season resulted in nutrient dilution, making the plants LESS nutritious per volume despite there being a lot more to eat.
So our sauropods had to eat a lot more plant mass to survive than modern herbivores, meaning they had to get much larger to digest all that less nutritious plant food they were consuming.

        >NTA
Would it be possible for Sauropods to have extremely efficient intestines and multiple stomachs to eat less yet accrue more energy? I just got my mind blown by hollow boned Sauropods.

          Anonymous

It's hard to tell how efficient they were for sure since all those secrets lie in the meat, and we don't have that. In general, though, efficiency is usually harder than volume and comes after a species has reached the biggest size its niche can support.

          Anonymous

pretty much the only thing we know about sauropod digestion is that they had a crop like a bird that was full of rocks to grind up the plants they ate.

also they took massive creamy shits.

how many stomachs they had is unknown, they may have been hindgut fermentators and engaged in coprophagy, or they may have had multiple stomachs for foregut fermentation. They didn't really have the teeth for chewing cud though.
